The Atlantic went four months without a hurricane. The first formed this morning, headed for the Gulf. Isaías went from depression to hurricane in a day, over the warmest Gulf water on record. AND Rachel will dump heavy rain from California to Utah.

They had to move the y axis The El Niño chart topped out at 30C. The 2026 line went through the top and they extended the axis to 31. Warmest water ever measured there, and it does not peak until December. Wet California, dry Australia, probably the warmest year on record in 2027.

High tide flooding on the U.S. coast happens three times as often as it did in 2000. The tide did not change. The ocean came up. El Niño is about to add a decade's worth of sea level in a few months. That part goes back. The rest does not.

When climate scientists say things are going to be horrendous, people find out many years later that we’re right. With this El Niño, the “find out” part will come in months.

Ecological impacts, global mean surface temperature, etc… so the metric you use depends on what you are trying to communicate. I’ll also add: the relative index obscures the climate warming signal because it basically subtracts it. So it’s not ideal in all cases.

A changing climate. 90% of heat retained in the climate system is stored in our oceans. That is now surfacing, and being released in our 2026 event. It’s why it’s a much more impressive warming of the east Pacific and that heat does have tangible impacts to more fuel for heat waves, heavier rains…

How relatively warm the event is tells us the expected intensity of the atmospheric response to the event. So this year will prob be on par (a little stronger) than 1997 and 1982. But there’s more to it. The raw ocean anomalies (and subsurface heat) have their own story to tell. It’s a story of

Relative (RONI) tells us how the event compares with the other warming ocean basins. And puts it into perspective - how warm is the El Niño to the other oceans at the time of the event. And here we see it’s much closer: bsky.app/profile/raro...

There’s a debate going on over on X. Which metric to use when talking El Niño. It’s complicated. Let’s start here. This is the excess heat available to each event. Clearly 2026 is far ahead (32% more excess heat than 1997). But that doesn’t tell the whole story. The reason we use the relative index

For years 90% of excess heat being retained by our climate system - due to the blanket of carbon pollution - has been going into the oceans. Much of that ends up in the West Pacific Warm Pool, so when the trades slacken and the Pacific rearranges itself, that heat comes back to haunt us. #elnino

It’s astonishing how far ahead the 2026 El Niño is. The red line is 2026. The other warmest El Niños are the colored lines. It’s not even playing in the same league. Some of this is of course due to this natural El Niño cycle on top of long-term ocean warming… 1/

El Niño just passed the +3.02C Niño 3.4 record set Nov. 18, 2015, two months early. These waters normally cool through summer. 2026 kept climbing. El Niño is natural. The ocean under it was heated by coal, oil and gas, and ~0.65C of the peak reading is expected to be that warming.

Do not underestimate the scale of this climate crisis. We are watching feedback loops accelerate, ice sheet collapse, ocean heat content, methane release, that could lock in irreversible warming. We have all witnessed the data, and it is not slowing down.

The people running these companies believe that climate change could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a fringe worry. Publicly, many executives soften their language to sound reasonable, but privately, the fear is real. No other industry poses this level of danger to civilization.

A common response is "if they know this, why keep drilling?" At BP, many have not internalized the stakes personally. At ExxonMobil, the stakes are well understood, but they're locked in a race for market share, believing if they don't extract it, a competitor will.

Treating this as an unstoppable race, and accepting the "endgame" of runaway warming, is a reckless gamble that should never be decided in a boardroom alone. Betting on future carbon removal to fix today's emissions requires far more confidence than the evidence supports.

Social acceptance: Look at the backlash against data centers. Do you think people will want loud, energy-hungry direct air capture facilities in their backyards? Surveys also show that people don't like it when we mess with the ocean, so scaling ocean methods will face a lot of opposition.

Everybody's asking if the derecho was climate change. There are two answers, because there were two storms in there. The rain is already in the observed record - the heaviest 1% of rain days in the Midwest are 45% wetter since 1958. The wind is in the projections. Two different kinds of evidence.
