You wouldn't know it from reading the headlines, but the president's downward mental health spiral is the biggest story in America right now We won't salvage democracy unless the media and pols start speaking the truth about Trump's damaged mind My new column www.inquirer.com/opinion/trum...

We need to find the words for Trump’s madness before things blow up | Will Bunch
The media and politicians haven’t pinned down anything resembling a suitable description for a president’s downward spiral or the looming battle for U.S. democracy.

New study finds the social cost of driving a car 1 km—including pollution, crashes, infrastructure, and noise—is more than *triple* the private cost paid by the car owner. doi.org/10.1016/j.tr...

This is wrong in many ways! But the most obvious is, value of all capital installed in US economy ~ $100T. Level of govt debt ~$40T.

Don’t buy a cow, or a car, and expect your city to give you someplace to park it. #UrbanTruth

This shows the sort of misleading framing that 404 Media, which prides itself on reporting accurately and tech-focused, can provide to third parties. In this case, users who don't know the difference between privacy and anonymity, and that you can't expect the latter when paying with a CREDIT CARD

Is there *any evidence whatsoever* for this statement? "To indulge in that kind of speculation is to grant the regime power it does not have, raising anxiety, disincentivizing voting, and discouraging societal resistance."

In other words, you're making the exact same mistake in the opposite direction! Reading the above leads ppl to think "Loneliness has not increased" when in reality they should think "we don't know whether it has increased". Absence of evidence vs evidence of absence etc etc

Photo of hand holding two packaged 1-ounce copper ingots from Ea-Nasir Brand. The package is bright and colorful, done in a modern style, and says:

Mesopotamia's Best

PERFECTLY FINE COPPER

ANCIENT SUMER'S MOST TRUSTED MERCHANT

"Quality copper wares since 1750 BC"
The back of the package, showing the back of the ingot. Says things like

QUESTIONS? COMPLAINTS? We'd love to hear from you! Fill out a clay tablet and return to Ea-Nasir in Ur *

Is it known what they use for the synthetic training data? From my read I'd guess they construct 'random' causal graphs w/ hyperparameters so that the distribution of synthetic datasets implied by those graphs somehow resembles the distn of relationships between variables in some reference datasets
