I wish companies would put more effort into keeping hackers and bots out of our accounts and less into keeping *us* out. Between passwords and passkeys and two-factor authentication, and then several hoops to jump through to make sure my account is secure, just checking my own information is a […]

R and I are watching a thing on YouTube about coastal rescues. People being rescued are surfers, paddlers, people exploring who get caught by the tide, even a hang-glider. I said to R "We're really boring, aren't we? Why are we so boring - is it metabolism, or . . .?" R shrugs and says, "I like […]

One of the things I enjoy about Mastodon is dropping in on random conversations people are having (when posts come up in my feed). People talk about all kinds of things that involve no hostility towards any group, no corporate propaganda, and genuinely interesting observations. Doesn't matter if […]

I love working for myself and out of my home, but #AuDHD makes it really hard to pace myself. Any disruption - especially mid-day - and the whole day is gone. It's particularly frustrating just now because I've got a wait list that keeps growing and I know I could be working much more […]

Tsunamis can travel faster than 800km per hour, according to something my husband is watching on television. "That would be a really good way to travel," I said. From upstairs, my son's voice: "That would be a *terrifying* way to travel." Can't really argue with that.

I realized this morning that I'm the kind of person who cares about how the dishwasher is loaded. It's always seemed like a ridiculous thing to care about, but here we are. In my defence, I don't make it a point of conflict. I've asked my guys to please put dirty dishes in the dishwasher, and […]

This morning for the first time in my life I used AI voluntarily. I wanted to see if it could answer a question I've been trying to answer since 1993. It couldn't (except to suggest a reason for there being no answer, which reason I had long ago concluded anyway), but in the process it took me […]

It's been a good day. Didn't accomplish quite as much as I'd hoped to do, but I went out for lunch with my husband, briefly browsed in a used bookshop (my husband's natural habitat) and didn't worry too much about how much work I got done. I can catch up tomorrow. I wish you all a lovely evening.

It's really annoying, as more details emerge about the trade deal #Carney wisely walked away from, that news media in the #US (understandable) but also supposedly balanced papers like the #Guardian talk about how Carney's decision was all about tariffs. No mention of the fact that the trade deal […]

I need some advice from fellow Ottawans. What are we meant to do with half-empty ink bottles for a printer we no longer have? Waste Explorer has an option for 'inkjet cartridges', but nothing for refill bottles. (The bottles themselves are plastic, so I suppose I could break them open, dump the […]

Living in Ottawa after decades in Chicago has its adjustments. For example, "tornado warning" means something very different. In Ottawa, it means "Take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches". In other words, "it might happen - pay attention to the weather". And that's worth doing […]

I've started using mind maps for tracking the progress of my various client cases. I've been using a spread sheet to keep track of where I am with them, but it doesn't quite work as an overview. I tend to think in hierarchical formats anyway, so I think this might be helpful. #genealogy […]

Great game so far - #Portugal's had most of the possession, but both sides are playing well, and there have been tense moments for viewers on both sides. Also, a lot less of the shirt-grabbing and actual body-grabbing that we've seen in some of these matches. #WorldCup #fedifc
