I like this. 'Celtic' doesn't do much for me either; dodgy tattoos, poorly understood mythology and so on. I do think, as touched on here, Ireland should interest itself in Wales and Scotland, and build ties with agents of future independence. llinos.substack.com/p/the-celtic...

What a 19th-century Welsh riot reveals about gender, power and why disruption isn’t always liberation ✍️ @llinosanwyl.bsky.social

This Welsh cross-dressing riot tells us more about gender diversity in history than you might first think
In the 1830-40s rural Wales was shaken by the Rebecca Riots, where protesters disguised themselves as women

A difficult name creates the same tiny scene over and over again. I wrote about what that repetition does to people, and why not every awkward interaction needs to become a moral event. 'Explaining My Name Is Boring, But Being Bored Is Not Oppression' llinos.substack.com/p/explaining...

Here’s an article I wrote! In the Rebecca Riots, men wore women’s clothes as disguise, not to undo gender, but to move through it. Sometimes identity becomes something systems can and will absorb (even rely on), without anything really shifting underneath

Cultural erosion doesn’t announce itself; it thins slowly (like men’s hair once they reach their mid-30s). Fewer dates. Smaller guarantees. More unpaid labour disguised as passion. ✍️Llinos Anwyl wp.me/p8Mk4U-1gLS

Cymraeg is held up as proof that Welshness is validated in an ancient and deep sense. But the same framing implies that its natural home is elsewhere: in the past, in the landscape, in feeling, in retreat✍️ Llinos Anwyl wp.me/p8Mk4U-1bU6

1/2 Iolo did turn away some money if it was connected to slavery, sometimes when he was in real financial hardship, and boycotted slave-grown sugar He also took handouts from his enslaver brothers, got a hefty inheritance from their Jamaica estates, and sold other products made by enslaved people

The curated version of ‘Welshness’, framed through woodland, ritual, and a promise of depth, feels generous and narrowing at the same time. At its core, the problem is this: Welshness is not misunderstood. It is enjoyed in ways that prevent encounter ✍️ Llinos Anwyl

This is brilliant on the fetishisation of the Welsh language and challenges it faces. "A culture cannot survive on affection alone. And a language cannot live if it is only ever encountered as a feeling."
