This photo was taken 100 yrs ago in August 1926 during the coal strike following the General Strike We see the Quaker Boot Repairing Centre, Rhondda The centre was set up by a group of Quakers in response to the strike, leading to the establishment of the Maes-yr-Haf Settlement at Trealaw in 1927.

Beatrice was a working-class woman - mother, daughter, and wife of dockland coal trimmers - and the elected representative for Castleland Ward on Barry Urban District Council. She helped establish Barry’s first maternity clinic and led the Relief Committee and soup kitchen during the 1926 Strike.
