i need some space… and maybe you do too
A massive spiral galaxy fills the image, with its bright yellow core seen near the upper left. Spiral arms whirl outward, laced through with dark brown dust and bright blue patches of star formation.Angled from the upper left corner to the lower right corner is a cone-shaped orange-red cloud known as Herbig-Haro 49/50. This feature takes up about three-fourths of the length of this angle. The upper left end of this feature has a translucent, rounded end. The conical feature widens slightly from the rounded end at the upper right down to the lower right. Along the cone there are additional rounded edges, like edges of a wave, and intricate foamy-like details, as well as a clearer view of the black background of space. In the upper left, overlapping with the rounded end of Herbig-Haro 49/50, is a background spiral galaxy with a concentrated blue center that fades outward to blend with red spiral arms. The background of space is speckled with some white stars and smaller, more numerous, fainter white galaxies throughout.A densely packed cluster of yellow stars shines at the center of the image, with more stars scattered throughout. Clouds of glowing indigo gas and dust dominate the lower half of the view, and a red star with diffraction spikes shines at upper right.A nebula made up of cloudy gas and dust in the form of soft and wispy clouds and, in the center, thin and highly detailed layers pressed close together. Large, bright stars surrounded by six long points of light are dotted over the image, as well as some small, point-like stars embedded in the clouds. The clouds are lit up in blue close to the stars; orange colors show clouds that glow in infrared light.

New issue of @brieferyet.bsky.social out from Clarke & Esposito today. We look at the long term transfer of value from society journal subscriptions to the Big Deal (and Transformative Agreements) of larger commercial publishers. Also US govt chaos, LLMs stifling traffic, and the launch of openRxiv.

My favorite thing about this event is that a) this went exactly as expected, and b) there were a bunch of people out there trying to get it done anyway. See you next year #bm100

Due to the layoffs I am afraid that we have had to take over the running of the US National Parks. We are updating the park regulations but for now the most important thing people can do before visiting a national park is to marinade themselves for 12 hours in olive oil, lime juice & garlic.

Scientists are called on more and more to respond to questions about their results. We tried to put down some ideas for the best ways to do that based on our years of observing these interactions. Engaging is better than not, especially when science is under attack. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.” University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.

Goodhart's Law: "when a metric becomes a target it ceases to be a good metric". Came into effect the second they started counting how many EOs Biden signed in first 100 days vs. Trump vs. Obama. Text of the orders doesn't matter, he just wants the top score!

Really valuable - I recommend reading all three articles. I liked this: "Scientists should better explain the scientific process and what makes it so trustworthy, while more candidly acknowledging that science can only provide the best available evidence and cannot dictate what people should value."
