The analysis of various DNNs providing artificial models of biological vision, showed the animate-inanimate distinction emerged already from earlier layers of the networks, modelling early and middle visual areas.

Results showed that the distinctive EEG neural signature of categorization was very strong when images of objects were intact or in greyscale. But, it remained, although weaker, for images that only retained color, shape and texture information.

Thus, say, a fish could appear in its full colorful version, or in a number of versions that progressively removed features. We quantitatively compare the neural responses across versions and relate them to behavioral categorization and representation at different layers of DNNs

Using frequency-tagging EEG in humans, we assessed the distinction between animals vs. other objects measuring a neural ‘categorization responses’ across multiple stimulus manipulations that systematically affected high, mid and low level features

Humans are remarkably good at recognizing other animals from appearance🐾 Our new study in J Cogn Neurosci @MITPress shows this ability is surprisingly resilient to visual information loss, using EEG, behavioral measures, and deep neural networks. With @jrhochmann.bsky.social C. Spriet F. Rostami 🧵👇

The excellent article of @ashleyjthomas.bsky.social proposes three core categories underlying human understanding of social relationship. In a commentary, we explore how infants come to discover such categories in the first place. I recommend both readings 😎 www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

10 years ago we identified a stage in social-event processing in which perception recognizes that two social agents are connected. A new study now shows that this stage is fully encapsulated from language and semantics. Soon to appear in @APA JEP:HPP Preprint osf.io/ngjwu/files/...

I’m very excited to be giving a talk today at the Université Sorbonne in Paris. I’ll be reflecting on how our work over the past few years can help shed light on the origins of human language. More about the program 👉 crlao.cnrs.fr/en/2026/03/j...

So proud and honored to have shared the floor with amazing women scientists for a panel discussion on Women in Neuroscience at NYU Abu Dhabi. It’s appalling to see that no matter where you are, women in science face the same big challenges. But changes are happening and we now have each other 💪

Two key findings: • Key regions of the social-interaction network (pSTS, EVA and MT) show selectivity to social interaction also when depicted in static images. Thus, motion is not necessary to trigger the social interaction network

We found that it takes no longer to access the category of objects (people vs other) in a scene, than to access the relation between them (facing vs non-facing), while recognizing their (inter)action (fight or dance) takes significantly longer.

We presented scenes showing two people (or two objects). We designed a behavioral paradigm to compare how much it takes to recognize that: • There are people (vs other objects) • They are facing vs facing away from each other • They are dancing vs fighting

Following Roman Wittig @taichimpproject.bsky.social presentation, some facts about human brain: It takes 2% of body weight but demands 20% of body energy. This’s because we have an immense cognitive capacity that defines what we are. My take: We’ve no excuses for being the id$¥s that we often are!

Cues for agent/patient role assignment were purely visual, corresponding to postures (e.g. in A: agent/boy is in a more dynamic and leaning forward posture) or spatial positioning (in B: the agent/boy could reach and act on the other but not the opposite)

Infants were tolerant to changes in body postures/movements, but not if those changes implied a change of roles. That is, they showed surprise when, say, the boy looked like the agent and the girl looked like the patient in trial n-1, but the opposite was true in trial n👇
