We show how features at different levels of the visual hierarchy contribute to the animate-inanimate distinction both independently and relative to other features across human brain, behavior and DNN representation. Paper: direct.mit.edu/jocn/article-a… (Proprint available)

The analysis of various DNNs providing artificial models of biological vision, showed the animate-inanimate distinction emerged already from earlier layers of the networks, modelling early and middle visual areas.

In all conditions that yielded a significant categorization response in the EEG, participants showed above-chance performance in a forced-choice categorization task, suggesting that the neural response reflected the individual’s ability to distinguish animals from other objects.

Liuba Papeo @ljubapi.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Results showed that the distinctive EEG neural signature of categorization was very strong when images of objects were intact or in greyscale. But, it remained, although weaker, for images that only retained color, shape and texture information.

Thus, say, a fish could appear in its full colorful version, or in a number of versions that progressively removed features. We quantitatively compare the neural responses across versions and relate them to behavioral categorization and representation at different layers of DNNs

Using frequency-tagging EEG in humans, we assessed the distinction between animals vs. other objects measuring a neural ‘categorization responses’ across multiple stimulus manipulations that systematically affected high, mid and low level features

Humans are remarkably good at recognizing other animals from appearance🐾 Our new study in J Cogn Neurosci @MITPress shows this ability is surprisingly resilient to visual information loss, using EEG, behavioral measures, and deep neural networks. With @jrhochmann.bsky.social C. Spriet F. Rostami 🧵👇
