One of the fun parts of working on the AP Stylebook team is that when The New York Times runs an article about @merriam-webster.com's definition of biweekly and bimonthly, we can message dictionary editor Peter Sokolowski about it.

GOP ad buyer mixes up Portlands, spends money meant to help Maine Sen. Susan Collins in Oregon
An outside group mistakenly spent nearly $25,000 to boost Collins in Portland, Oregon, rather than Portland, Maine. The buyer admitted to the error and refunded the PAC.

As soon as the clock hit zero, Dan Quinn ripped the headset off his backwards-ballcapped head and spiked it to the turf, in much the same way a well-prepared quarterback of a well-coached team might be expected to do with the football, when his team is out of timeouts and well within range of a game-winning field goal in the final, ticking seconds of a critical NFL game.

Doing it would mean *calling out the media* -- identifying these "calm down" narratives, holding them up to the light, explicitly refuting them. If they just get drawn into one mini-argument after another (is *this* little thing worth *this much* time & anger?) they'll be worn down.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had not seen the Onion headline.

We are talking in the back of a black SUV, parked in front of his offseason home in the Toronto suburbs, when I mention the bit of satire that went viral during the Western Conference Finals in May. I hand him my phone and he laughs.

“Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Trying to Draw Foul While Shooting Free Throw,” reads the headline, which is accompanied by an image of him flailing on the foul line. “Trying to draw a foul at the free-throw line,” he says, “that would be good.”
