Been broke for so long and it feels so good to be able to splurge again on a knowledge haul for my little resource library. I have more works I want (I no longer live near an academic/research library) but these were long-overdue additions for me:

A copy of the original paperback novel "The Exorcist" by William Peter Blatty. It has a purple jacket with white type. At the top is a header that reads "#1 Bestseller, The Shocker of the Year". There is a small black and sepia image underneath the text. The image is of a ghostly-faced girl with dark hair looking up from a slightly top-down view, but her face and intent are shrouded in shadow.

AI policy is only considered in these terms because of the vast intellectual influence of Yudkowsky specifically, and because, downstream of him, a neurotic or religious obsession with AI doom is the primary means by which people engage with these concepts.

This industry frames its regulations in this way because it has, at its core, a millenarian death cult that worships and fears AI as the cause of the end of the world, that feels compelled to create AI, and that at least somewhat wants to destroy AI as a field.

No other industry has ever framed any regulation in terms of "stop", "pause", or "slow down". Those are insane ways to consider any form of policy. Policy should prevent bad outcomes and encourage good ones, it is never about some specific speed.

Baily's Beads, Aug. 21, 2017 - From Jason Major (jpmajor.bsky.social) - flic.kr/p/WK3u9e
Here's another processed photo of the Moon during the eclipse on Monday. This one focuses on the effect known as "Baily's Beads," which are bright points of light along the Moon's limb briefly visible in the few seconds before totality. They are caused by sunlight shining between mountains and low points on the Moon's surface, and named after British astronomer Francis Baily. The purple "flames" are actually parts of the Sun's lower atmosphere, visible beyond the silhouette of the Moon. (North is to the right in this view.) Captured with a Nikon D810 and Sigma 150-600 lens from Fort Johnson in Charleston, SC.
