In all honesty, I'm less annoyed by the "must declare a party" bit than I am by the "receive mailers from the wrong gotdamn county's party committee" bit. The mailers are truly the pettiest reason I haven't declared a party.

Neither does NJ. (Well, technically, you *can* vote in the primaries if you're an Independent, but they make you register with a party, which means you get stupid amounts of mail from the wrong county's committee before you get so disgusted with them you change back to Independent in a month.)

Thank you GS of Southern Appalachians council for the perfect kickoff to our troop year; your "Coat of Many Colors" program helped us think about ways to live like Dolly & make our part of the world a better place. We got our patches & they're perfect:

A hand holds the Girl Scouts pf Southern Appalachians council's "Coat of Many Colors" earned patch which was inspired by Dolly Parton's song, and approved in 2009.

It is a rectangular embroidered patch, with a dark blue background & golden yellow border. Across the top, in golden yellow, is "Coat of Many Colors." The centered patch image is a patchwork heart with a hand-sewing needle stuck into it, as if a stitcher has paused their work. In the lower right-hand corner is an embroidered "Love, Dolly" signature; in the lower left-hand corner is a small GS Trefoil & "GSCSA" for "Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians."

The patch program is designed for girls at the Brownie level and above; my troop members are 11th & 12th grade high schoolers at the Ambassador level.
