This memory has slowly stolen my voice and my love of music the older I get and I hate it but combatting it requires confronting the fear that most people will hate my voice too and that I truly am bad at singing. Even though I think I do a pretty good Disney Princess Style Voice decent justice

Anyway this is also a post about how my mother steadily shamed me for singing until I was a teenager when she straight up told me I was a bad singer for singing songs not in my range, off key, whilst doing the chores she required perfectly of me (but not my younger sisters) and shouldn't sing.

And like. I don't mind telling it. But when I do, I lose the last people connecting me to the child I was and the hope I had for myself as that child. And that loss of who I was is more of a loss to me than the people I'll lose sometimes... And it makes me afraid to use my voice at all.

The thing that's always caught me up about telling my own story is that telling it truthfully and fully alienates the last of the family I trusted just as much as the family I never trusted. Because they all allowed me to be treated that way, and they were all complicit when It happened or after.
