A poem about National Poetry Day. From the time when Cockburns Port was sponsoring a poetry competition.
I saw the best wines of my generation
Drunk by some other bugger.
I’ve read Ginsburg; put down Kathy Acker
Knackered. I’ve
Given it a lot of thought
I’d rather have a glass of port
Than watch the same vague familiar faces
With gaping expressions all enthusing,
Proclaim on the behalf of the petty
That this specific art’s for the many.
This is all beyond me.
Like the stuff in Saatchi’s cold art gallery.
Self indulgence is not true poetry.

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

Mum had dementia. 2 years of care home fees took every last penny of her savings and then her house was sold. When she asked who was paying I would lie and say it came free for over 90s now. It would have broken her heart to know everything she scraped n crimped to save was gone

As someone has already pointed out this will hit those on carers allowance, many caring for elderly parents. Or disabled children. Discouraging carers of course will in the long run prove far more expensive.

In August this year, for 1 month, the Government made bus journeys free for children in England. Now, new figures show that the scheme enabled more than 14 million free child journeys. One bus service in the North East had 710% more child passengers than last summer. Our reaction 👇
Photo of Michael Solomon Williams with the quote, "As well as saving families money on millions of journeys, free child bus fares encouraged people to give the bus a try, inspiring a new generation of bus users. It's great to see this efficient, sustainable form of transport being given such a boost. But even with free fares, access to buses is not equal. One in seven people live in places without a decent bus service. The Government needs to do more to reconnect these transport deserts."

A serious democratic society simply cannot allow this. That's £72 million from just two men. (Both, until lately, based overseas). The average UK earner (full-time) would have to work for over 1,800 years to raise that much. It's a nuclear strike on any pretence at the equality of political power

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.

A suggested statement for Andy Burnham.
‘The British public decided in the 1930s that they would not tolerate black-shirted militias marching through their streets. They would cherish robust political argument; they would not accept thuggery and intimidation. When Oswald Mosley led his Blackshirts to Cable Street, local people turned them back. A new law – introduced by a Liberal, backed by Labour and carried by a Conservative majority – banned private militias, political uniforms and ‘the use or display of physical force in promoting any political object’. The British people are as determined today as in the 1930s that they will not accept the methods of Mussolini and the Munich Beer Hall. This government will uphold the law and defend the traditions of British democracy’.

The polling company JL Partners is unwilling to follow the rules, so should not be in the polling council. Also the Telegraph appears to have lied about the provenance of the poll it published. Even if they didn't know that Reform commissioned it, it was dishonest to suggest it was a Telegraph poll.
