Today at #ABS2025, I participated in the early career workshop: Weaving the Future of Animal Behavior. We discussed networking, time management, collaborations & research, receiving wisdom from faculty & sharing advice. Highly recommend to other postdocs/early faculty (or SIGNAL for grad students)!

Eco/Evo friends: Where would you recommend submitting a manuscript that is a short article at the intersection of community ecology and animal behavior?

And we don't think the sizes of sperm or testes are influencing the phylogeny, but rather the reverse - that phylogeny is influencing testis structures and sperm size in anoles.

Thanks for checking it out! And not a dumb question. But, I don't think testes' structures could "define" a phylogeny as you suggest - they aren't directly involved in the evolution of isolation the way genital structures often can be.

Week 4 of my lab Writing Team experiment is the next paragraph of Methods. For most, it's about how we measured lizard behavior in the lab. Students are incorporating my feedback each week, and we're inching toward more precise writing. They're seeing how this is different from writing for class!

In week 3, they're working on the 2nd Methods paragraph - for us, the housing and care of lizards in captivity. So far, this is GREAT. I'm trying to take the mystery out of writing a ms for my students, and we're making concrete progress on writing every week. I'll keep you posted with what's next!

This semester, my 4 senior-most students are the lab "writing team." We meet for 30 min/week and talk about their writing goal for the next week. The first week? Their task was to make a title page for each of their developing manuscripts. We made these documents LOOK like a manuscript.

My biggest scholarly challenge as a biologist at a PUI is turning great datasets into manuscripts. I'm trying something new this semester, to get undergrads to change mindset from "I'll finish data collection before I graduate" to "I'll collect data AND write the bulk of a ms before graduation."
