Today’s #SolarpunkArtAugust takes inspiration from the Great Green Wall being used to hold back desertification below the Sahara. Plots like these have been very successful in reclaiming the Sahel and increasing useable green space
Crescent-shaped plots of dirt and grass, with a tree growing in each. Solar panel arrays line the dune in the background.

A core component of #solarpunk narrative is that the future isn't just for the "fittest" who survive the apocalpyse. Rather, we're going to get through this *by* banding together and not leaving anyone behind. We'll need the whole range of human experience, and the whole range deserves to join in.

The #SolarpunkArtAugust prompt for 8/14 is "disability rights." This was a tricky one to draw. As a model for the kind of disability rights I want to see in the future, I drew my own glasses: nearsightedness is so thoroughly accommodated in our society, it doesn't even register as a disability.
A marker and pen drawing of my glasses. They have thin plastic frames, black on the outside, turquoise on the inside. And just to be clear, they're regular glasses, not smart glasses (gross).

Yesterday's #SolarPunkArtAugust was "solar ovens" and so I'm sharing a couple of spreads from my handmade collaged book of the Solarpunk manifesto, with solar ovens featured.
A collage spread from a handmade book featuring hand stitching, a woman dancing, a group gathered by the stream, a tree planting, colored geometric texture, some digitally rendered botanicals, a bit of an impressionist painting involving a tree and some water, and a photo of a young girl next to a giant solar oven. Text includes handwritten "justice is what love looks like in public" and the printed, "9. Solarpunk emphasizes environmental sustainability and social justice." "10. Solarpunk is about finding ways to make life more wonderful for us right now, and also for the generations that follow us." and "11. Our future must involve repurposing and creating new things from what we already have. Imagine 'smart cities' being junked in favor of smart citizenry."An image of a spread in a handmade collage book. A crayon rub texture in the background, with a drawing of a figure handling garden cuttings in front of a cozy house with a wheelbarrow next to it, also a photo of group of over ten solar ovens. The text reads, "21. In Solarpunk, we've pulled back just in time to stop the slow destruction of our planet. We've learned to use science wisely, for the betterment of our life conditions as part of our planet. We're no longer overlords. We're caretakers. We're gardeners."

Today's #SolarpunkArtAugust prompt is bicycles, and it makes me really happy to share this spread from the stitchbook I made this spring. Riding bikes instead of driving cars is solidly in the center of my climate action Venn diagram inspired by @ayanaeliza.bsky.social's TED Talk (link below).
A cloth book open to a spread with Ayana Elizabeth Johnson's venn diagram about your climate action: three intersecting circles with the words "what work needs doing?" "what are you good at?" and "what brings you joy?" all on the left page and a variety of bikes (and a scooter!) embroidered and cloth collaged on the right.

Urban gardens originally had me thinking of a downtown full of canopy down at ground level, and rooftop gardens at sky level, but then I started thinking of reclaimed highways-- the way old train tracks are being made into greenways... #SolarpunkArtAugust
a black and white printout of a highway overpass where all levels of the highway have been painted over with trees, plants, paths for walking, biking, benches, a little pushcart vender with an umbrella, and a pond. There are also birds and butterflies, ivy climbing the walls, a biker bikes past on the one side, and a parent and child play near the pond.

Today's #SolarpunkArtAugust prompt is "Urban gardens." For this drawing, I imagined reclaiming a city street for a community garden (in raised beds for now, because of poor soil quality), and there was plenty of room left over for walkways, bike lanes, and a tram line.
A city street with two- and three-story buildings on either side in various bright colors. The space that would normally be taken up by cars and parking is instead occupied by light rail, a two-way set of bike lanes, and a grid of raised beds.

The August 9th #SolarpunkArtAugust prompt is "balcony gardens." My first thought here was towering garden-lined skyscrapers, but I decided to paint a multiplex with just a few units. Even this amount of density and shared green space feels transformational.

My favorite experience volunteering at a repair café was teaching someone how to darn a slightly motheaten but fabulous pair of pink trousers from a vintage wool suit. Our community makerspace had a just-right pink thread and they were so delighted to pick up a skill to save their thrift store find.

August 5 is "little free pantries": think of a food bank with more flexibility, but also the potential for spoilage, vandalism, and pests. These challenges are not insurmountable: there are flourishing free pantries maintained by volunteers who curate the contents (and help themselves too!).

I made this drawing with pencil, then marker, then ink from a fine felt-tip pen, based on a photo of some of our houseplants upstairs. They wouldn't survive in our local outdoor climate, so they are only alive here because of the mutual relationship they have with us humans. #SolarpunkArtAugust
Photo of a sketchpad lying on mottled blue carpet. The sketchpad marker-and-ink drawing shows a wooden latticework with potted plants hanging in the spaces between the beams. The plants are different colors of green, and a little purple. Some pots are empty, and there are a few spaces in the lattice still to fill.
