Stellar day. Porridge with A. Made Anzac slice for the girls to take to their theatre rehearsals. Took my bestie to the Wollmarkt. Made zucchini slice for lunch this week and pizza dough for tonight. Am now on the couch with my knitting.

This is so incredibly sad. I LOVED reading to my kids. Every single night once we got them home. Why would you outsource that to a machine?

I'm not American but I'll absolutely come along. I suggest the Englischer Garten or the Augustiner Keller on Kaufingerstraße if it's raining.

I'd like to offer help but I don't know what to do either! My usual catchphrase is that I can't help them with an empty page - come to me with a plan or a mindmap and we can go from there. If they're not doing the reading or the scaffolding what more can we do?

Different to sports, but my Mum (who was learning through her second language) brought home a test that she had got 97% on. Her Dad asked what happened to the other 3% 🤯 she never shared another achievement with him, not even when she got a university degree in her forties.

I love my job and I absolutely believe in the system I am teaching in. The kids are incredible and my colleagues are for the most part amazing. I hope the school's reputation can recover from this... And that the goodwill and trust can also be rebuilt.

I have known for a while that schools run largely on goodwill. Goodwill and trust take a long time to build up but can be broken down pretty quickly. We were offered drinks and a formal apology at break this morning, and a promise that they would take measures to stop this happening again.

Kids couldn't make it to extra curricular activities on time. We made it work as much as possible, helping each other out. Teacher solidarity! It was tough. What made it really bad, though, was unclear communication from management, and (until this week) unwillingness to take accountability.

While my second timetable was okay, my kids' were atrocious and especially with A's blood sugar we could graphically SEE the physical strain of the long days and frequent movement. Colleagues with small kids had to scurry to figure out childcare arrangements because they had to work til 17.00.

...have to get used to a new teacher. And I will have some new faces and names to learn as well. I have to find new times for the three students with special learning needs who I support once a week. I have to email A's new teachers with info about her T1D. It has been such a disruptive start.

Advised on Wednesday that we would get new timetables today, to go into effect from Monday. It's quite a bit better - no period 10 and there are far fewer lessons on Friday afternoons. I will have some new kids in my S1L2 class - kids who have only just got the hang of my expectations will now...

Sudden reshuffle and a second provisional timetable from 15 September (it started mid-week, so some courses had extra lessons that week, some had fewer or none). No period 10 on Fridays or for years 1-3 (grades 6-8). Still had big gaps in the middle of the day. Promised new timetables by mid-term.

Lisa B @litker.eurosky.social · 02/10/2026
We started school September 1 with THE WORST timetables ever. I am not kidding. First years (11 years old) last thing on a Friday (they used to finish 12.40 Fri). Sudden imposition of Period 10 (16.05-16.50). Huge gaps in the middle of the day for kids from all year levels. It was an absolute mess.

It’s the end of September. Haven’t had much time for #mudlarking this month but here are nine sweet finds spotted over the last few weeks. From the top, left to right: • corner piece from a Medieval Penn tile featuring fleur-de-lis pattern ⚜️ • limestone marble, possibly from Salzburg 17th/18thC 1/
Nine finds from September on the Thames Foreshore. From the top, left to right - a corner of a medieval floor tile showing a fleur-de-lis pattern, a limestone marble from Salzburg (late 17th/18thC), a clay pipe bowl showing a 16thC man dressed in headgear from that era, the pipe made by Gambier of Paris.
Middle row - a green glass duck, a handful of handmade 14th to 18thC dress pins, a blue on white Transferware sherd showing a waterman in a boat.
Bottom row - a child’s lead toy car toy, a sherd of blue & manganese Westerwald grey stoneware pottery, a piece of black flint showing a fossilised bivalve shell.

A's birthday party today - escape room + cake! (Yes her birthday was over a month ago, but her friends are always away on summer holidays... Also I am very disorganised)
Close up of a cake, sloppily frosted with blue lemon buttercream. It has some sprinkles and small Hatsune Miku figurines on it.

Folks are bragging that they've gotten the new Meta Glasses ADA-qualified as hearing aids so you cannot legally keep them from restrooms or locker rooms. But if hearing aid with pervert cam is ok what about: Wheelchairs with car-crushing monster truck wheels? Guide dog with a gatling gun?

Same deal as with all those men in the Pelicot case. Not a single person in that group chat thought, "this is wrong, I should notify the police"?

My five year old has the soul of Orson Welles. We were outside school and he 'put a kiss in my pocket for later.' Extremely touched by this, I gave him two back. He dug out the second one, THEATRICALLY CRUSHED IT IN HIS FIST and said 'one is enough.'

being so fr when I say that transmisogyny has put feminism back like 50 years

seravph
what i thought we had distanced ourselves from was the reduction of women to vaginas and wombs and the ability to bear children. i thought we had progressed past 'dresses are for women and pants are for men. i thought we progressed past the idea that someone is less of a woman if she does not adhere strictly to beauty standards. i thought we progressed past the idea that naturally being comfortable adhering to highly feminine standards is vulgar. but i (sarcastically) guess no one could have predicted that trans-exclusive feminism would be the downfall of all the progress we've made

They said in July 2024 it would be 8-12 months. I had to get confirmation from work, and the office was closed for the summer (school) so by the time I got that in September, the expected time had blown out to 18-24 months. When I renewed my Aufenthaltstitel they said it wouldn't be too much longer.

#EduSky - any teachers with arthritis in their hands (or really, anyone with arthritis who has to write or use fine motor skills) - what works for you in terms of manual marking and note taking? I've only recently been diagnosed and am noticing it is worse this school year.

I think she'd be surprised, because she thought she'd be an actor or diplomat. But I could show her how much theatre and diplomacy is involved in teaching 😁 she'd be PISSED that I was no longer using Chinese and had to learn German in the meantime. She'd be thrilled to be living in Europe.
