No plans this weekend? Come join us at Rainbow Space Magic for 2 (free, virtual) days talking about queer speculative fiction. Details at rainbowspacemagic.org (Panels & readings will be recorded, so you can catch up after on our YouTube channel)
The background is black with lines connecting small white lights in a seemingly random pattern..

The text reads: Building Resilient Communities, October 3-4, 2026

There is a rainbow coloured circular logo. In the middle it says RSM, Rainbow Space Magic. The line of the R in RSM is a downwards pointing pen that is the beginning of a multicoloured circle around the text. It ends above the RS with small images of a dragon and a ringed planet.

Below the logo it says, “A Queer SFF Convention” and RainbowSpaceMagic.org

My lovely client, Charlotte Van Ryswyk, had her first book signing for her debut novel, “The Secret of the Moon Dial,” recently! I got to work with Charlotte on this middle grade steampunk fantasy book and now it’s out in the world! Find out more here: charlottevanryswyk.com/books/

Y’all…I made a bookmark for readers and/or writers. 😆 Who wants one?
Spread out bookmarks showing both sides: on one side, it says “Ask me about my book!” with a cartoon brain sitting on a chair reading. On the other side, it says “DON’T ask me about my book!” with that same cartoon brain reading, now with a blanket over their head. Purple background with literarylaura.com on the bottom.

I feel like this brings to light what a lot of us were feeling/seeing/experiencing… and it’s horrifying on so many levels. If a publisher now requires an author to pay for not only dev editing but copyediting AND they have to market and promote themselves… what’s the point of a publisher?

I know that Writing the Other and Tanya Gold both offer scholarships for their courses. I don’t have a catch-all answer, but it’s…hard. Something I’ve had to remind myself of is that it takes time to build the knowledge and experience so it’s okay to take time to get through classes.

Well I’m a sucker for this kind of question - I definitely don’t think it’s a cop out! Sounds like you’re learning in accordance with your time/capability/preferences. If you find something in the future that’s longer and you want to sign up, you can do that too!

#StetChat A7. I also have to mention, for fiction developmental editors, Henry Lien’s courses or book on story structure, as well as "Meander, Spiral, Explode: Design and Pattern in Narrative” by Jane Alison. These will show you other story structures beyond the five-act.

#StetChat A7. If you’re starting out or want to work on some core editing skills, but you don’t want to/can’t afford a full certificate program, I recommend checking out your local/favorite editing organization and then spacing out courses as you can. I keep saying Writing the Other today too!

Writing the Other is FABULOUS for courses and webinars. It’s aimed at writers, but there’s a lot to learn as an editor. These include story structures from around the world to how to write characters different from yourself in all kinds of ways. #StetChat

#StetChat A5. Ooh now you’re going to make me go look up my list! Okay, this is definitely nonexhaustive, but I’ve taken courses on (basic editing stuff) proofreading, copyediting, developmental editing and editing query letters & synopses.

Yes, conferences have been invaluable! Not only for the sessions, but connecting with other editors and getting into deeper conversations with them about so many different things. #StetChat

I often find that learning new things has to do with following the shiny things/following the dopamine. New book about story structure? Oooh I’m in and I will tell everyone I talk to about it. This is how I’ve ended up at a lot of the courses I’ve taken!

#StetChat A2. Some of these have included courses, webinars, and more by the CIEP and the EFA, Jennifer Lawler, Writing the Other, and other wonderful resources from fellow editors.

#SteteChat A2. I didn’t do a certificate program - my path has been pretty windy and strange! I started in-house as an editor, then moved countries, and started taking online courses. I wanted to learn everything about fiction AND editing, so my learning has come from a lot of different places.

I take courses and keep learning constantly! Language and literary expectations are always changing. Editorial organizations have good courses that teach you what you often don’t know you don’t know. I also enjoy taking courses that aren’t “officially” for editors but deal with storytelling.

Hey #edibuddies! Here are some tips when working with neurodivergent writers: 1. Ask about communication preferences, including tone, frequency, and format. 2. Ask everyone about accommodations, regardless of diagnosis or disability. 3. Ask about intentions in the writing. 4. Be kind.

Developmental editors & fiction writing coaches help you see through the rounds of revisions, the frustration, the sticking points, and show you what’s already shining. Curious about working together? Let’s see if we’re a good fit! literarylaura.com
When do I need an editor? A friendly green monster asks against a backdrop of purple and blue swirls. “I love my story! Does it…work though?” asks a yellow concerned monster. “Why won’t my characters behave? Why has the plot gone sideways?” A frustrated blue monster with horns asks. “Does my pacing work? Does this story make sense? I can’t see it anymore!” a panicked fluffy pink monster asks. At the bottom, the answer: When you’re ready for professional and personalized advice. www.literarylaura.com
