My piece for @lseeuroppblog.bsky.social : Futuro Nazionale’s programme does more than oppose immigration. It turns citizenship into a hierarchy—secure when inherited, conditional when acquired. Survey data show why the distinction matters in Italy and Spain. blogs.lse.ac.uk/europpblog/2...

Futuro Nazionale is redefining what it means to be Italian
Futuro Nazionale goes further than simply opposing immigration, with a platform that effectively seeks to redefine what it means to be an Italian citizen.

Absolutely dramatic defeat for CDU and victory for AfD. Main question is: will BSW make it into parliament. Currently AfD is estimated at 39 seats, BSW at 5 (out of 83). AfD majority is unlikely, but still possible.

Yes, and the text makes it explicit: Italy comes first, then the state and institutions, which must serve it. That reverses the fascist order, where it was the state that was meant to constitute the nation, not the other way round.

Not a politics of immigration. A politics of membership: what the nation is, how one enters, how it is graded, how one leaves. Italy votes next year. Worth reading the document, not the headlines about it. Italian quotations verbatim; translations mine.

And the nation is imagined across time: back to gli avi, the ancestors, forward to generations not yet born. Natality is not family policy here. It is civilisational continuity.

Lisa Zanotti @lisazanottiphd.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
So membership is graded, not flat. Inherited at the centre, assimilated next, residents outside that, and beyond the circle, remigration.

Lisa Zanotti @lisazanottiphd.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
The part I find most striking. A violent crime by a naturalised citizen would be grounds for a retrospective finding that the person "was never really assimilated." Citizenship is revoked. Remigration follows. Acquired membership isn't just revocable — it can be declared never to have been valid.

Lisa Zanotti @lisazanottiphd.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
The programme states the asymmetry itself: "Per fare un italiano non ci vuole un corso di educazione civica: ci vogliono secoli." To make an Italian you don't need a civics course. You need centuries.

Lisa Zanotti @lisazanottiphd.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
Two routes to belonging, and they are not symmetrical. Inherited: presumed, nothing to prove. Acquired: 20 years of residence, Italian at C1 with written and oral exams, clean record, and a signed declaration of assimilation to Greek, Roman and Christian civilisation.

Lisa Zanotti @lisazanottiphd.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
What is the nation made of? Descent and civilisation. The italic peoples are "a community of law and of blood, because founded on the family, which is the source of the nation." Rome supplies the body. Christian Rome the soul.

Futuro Nazionale (Italy's newest far-right party) has published its first programmatic document. Most coverage focuses on the remigration plan. The more interesting claim is elsewhere: this is not just a programme about immigration. It is a programme about membership.A thread. 🧵

Authoritarian, But Not Nativist - @aborges75.bsky.social & @lisazanottiphd.bsky.social examine how far-right parties in Latin America compare to their Western European counterpart: buff.ly/4fK7Fwk (OPEN ACCESS) #PSHighlyViewed 3/10 @polstudiesassoc.bsky.social #polsky #polsci
Abstract
Research on far-right parties has mostly focused on Western Europe, where anti-immigration agendas and related nativist ideas have played a major role in right-wing radicalization. In this article, we analyze the rise of the far right in Latin America, a region where immigration has been much less prominent in public debates. Drawing on the 2020 Chapell Hill Expert Survey, we propose to assess the extent to which Latin American far-right parties fit existing conceptualizations that identify nativism and authoritarianism as the core characteristics of this party family. Given the relative unimportance of nativism as a distinguishing feature of cases of right-wing extremism/radicalism in the region, we propose a more parsimonious conceptualization of the far right. We also develop a typological classification and find that authoritarian-fundamentalist parties that embrace an extreme form of religious conservatism are the most common subtype of far-right party in Latin America.

Quoted by @afp.com and @barrons.com on Latin America’s resurgent right after Colombia’s election. The key point: these victories are less a uniform ideological shift than the rise of personalistic leaders able to build contingent anti-incumbent coalitions. www.barrons.com/news/latin-a...

Democratic erosion does not always arrive through rupture. In Chile, early decisions by Kast’s government suggest a subtler process: the gradual narrowing of democracy from within.

5/ The playbook is predictable — and therefore counterable. Protect independent media, safeguard courts, monitor how mainstream parties adopt far-right framings, and build democratic counter-narratives. Discourse is an early-warning signal. By the time policies change, it's already too late.
110
Lisa Zanotti @lisazanottiphd.bsky.social · 05/03/2026
4/ The key insight isn't about extreme statements. It's about REPETITION. Mid-range attacks on judicial independence, press freedom, and pluralism, deployed constantly across hundreds of interviews, normalise illiberalism without anyone sounding the alarm.
120
Lisa Zanotti @lisazanottiphd.bsky.social · 05/03/2026
3/ Spain shows a clear gradient: Vox is the most illiberal, the centre-right partially accommodates, the left is more liberal. Argentina surprises: far right and left converge at similarly high illiberal levels, while the centre-right is the most moderate.
120
Lisa Zanotti @lisazanottiphd.bsky.social · 05/03/2026
2/ We analysed 255 elite interviews and 2,572 responses from political leaders across the ideological spectrum in Spain and Argentina, coded with LLMs. The finding: ~85–90% of illiberal rhetoric targets courts, media, and political opponents — not elections or citizenship rights.

1/ 🧵 Can language erode a democracy before a single law changes? In our new report "Tracing Illiberal Talk," Hugo Marcos-Marné and I dig into how far-right rhetoric undermines democratic institutions — long before policies shift. Part of a broader research project we're developing together.
