G’morning, peeps. With orchestras and music programs under stress or threat lately, it’s probably cold comfort to know that these kinds of conflicts have a long, long history. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #ClassicalMusic #FarSide 💫 The more you know…
Cave person music ensemble of rocks and sticks, with some players hitting others on the head with rocks. Ensemble led by a cave person.

It’s so unusual to hear it on its own, isn’t it? Always buried back there as that heartbeat in a continuo part... Of what he’s written, I really like his tombeaus—elegiac and almost weightless tributes. Tho modern, everything of his feels like it’d be perfectly content in the 18th-c.

Turovsky is a fascinating artist—his modern compositions for lute or theorbo are so…ethereal. To me, the sound like they would be perfectly at home in the golden age of those instruments.

Lisa @lisasass.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Isn’t it! And especially so with even the little I’ve found translated of the poet for whom it was written. Turovsky writes some amazing modern compositions for lute and theorbo—not exactly found every day!

I am so glad I’m not the only one 😅. Sometimes it gets interesting to explain how the heck my brain works. So long as I don’t mix up that yelling and swearing is OK at hockey games but not concerts… Any particular period or civilization that’s grabbed your attention?

Giovanni Zamboni is the only correct answer to, “Which Baroque composer to play to celebrate women’s pro hockey exploding to 12 teams, and its first season-long nat’l tv deal?”🏒🎻 (Yes, Zamboni is his real name.) 🎵 Lute Sonata No. 3, Op. 1: II. Giga #PWHL #ClassicalMusic #hockey

It’s a crazy combination, being passionate about both classical music and hockey! That year I had to change in the parking lot for the symphony was nuts…😆 I’m so glad women’s hockey is taking hold—2 leagues & symphony is the kind of dilemma I’m happy to work out!

My ultimate conflict was in 2023: STL Blues home opener AND Hilary Hahn w/SLSO. So…hockey jersey for day game, dressier clothes stashed in the trunk, postgame costume change, slap on lipstick, rush to the symphony. Aaand, here we are again with the tough choices. 🏒🎻 🤦🏻‍♀️ Sigh. #NHL #PWHL #SLSO #STL

I’m on the [French] horns of a dilemma. This is my happiest time of year, except when a hockey season opener competes with a can’t-miss symphony program. Dec 5, the choice is Jeremy Denk + #SLSO vs. #PWHL season opener So. Torn. 🎹🏒🤦🏻‍♀️ #classicalmusic #hockey slso.org/event/dvorak...

Love this! And can feel the fit—horns in 6 sound like a portal to another dimension. I always found distance to be compelling, with horns it sounds more like a memory than music in real time. That finale…😍

I have a soft spot for first symphonies, in part for how they matured. That’s very cool on 2, and I’m with you on 8. 1,2,5 here—6 used to make the cut, but only because I wanted to play with the hammer 😁

From the bench… Crook: Easy sight lines, lid can get tricky. Can sound weird if it’s up all the way. Ensemble spot, equality rules. Keyboard: Not always easy for communication. Soloist spot. Add’l option: downstage a bit with either. (Harpsichord: toss all of that out 😁)
