Liron Alethea @liralethea.bsky.social · 10/10/2026Tell me about it. Being a software developer in the UK sucks. Even more so as no one seems to have an understanding of how good software can become a competitive edge. No long term vision, and no long term investment. Why pay for innovation when you can just muddle through. 000
Liron Alethea @liralethea.bsky.social · 10/10/2026That's why I am actually positive about the European union's open source initiative to make their backend independent from US influence. This builds a shared basis for European vendors to offer open systems with full commercial support. Their clients get more choice, with no lock in. 010
Liron Alethea @liralethea.bsky.social · 10/10/2026In the end, non software development customers didn't care about open source, as they didn't have the resources to benefit from it. They cared about price, and business continuity. Open source did help our army of consulting partners, but an open core model would have done the same. 110
Liron Alethea @liralethea.bsky.social · 10/10/2026This is very, very similar in practice to the open core model and proprietary software. Open source helped us to get the foot in the door and ease the fear of what happens if we, the vendor, go bust. But you can get the latter with source code escrow. 100
Liron Alethea @liralethea.bsky.social · 10/10/2026When we made open source enterprise software, we sold it like an appliance. We always had to include that changing the code voids your maintenance, as people do crazy things to code. We ended up with a plug-in system that shields the core while allowing customisation. 110
Liron Alethea @liralethea.bsky.social · 10/10/2026Access to source code is only one element. Using open source means now you are responsible for maintaining it, which easily can get more expensive than paying a vendor for maintenance and updates. A yearly license fee of 100k sounds expensive, but is less than the cost of a developer. 210

There's no documentation, no one who knows how the software actually works (compared to what people think it works), and no one has a deep understanding of the system (hardware and software). It's cheaper to hope, pray and just keep it running. 220
Liron Alethea @liralethea.bsky.social · 08/10/2026There's also the other side of it: so much of those old systems is cobbled together without specs, works for as long as you don't rock it, and often relies on undocumented side effects of the underlying systems. 120
Liron Alethea @liralethea.bsky.social · 08/10/2026The idea never went away, and so the medical field picked it up and created conversion therapy (as camps may have gone out of fashion after WW2, but the desire to kill stayed alive). Liron Alethea @liralethea.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Emil Kraeplin and Karl Bonhoeffer were famous proponents of the idea that being gay is something you pick up from others.
