I guess I'm trying NaPoWriMo again this year. This is from the set of prompts by Irshaad Poetry (@irshaadpoetry on IG). Day 1: "saying goodbye to your childhood home."

First half of a poem titled "looming":

Nighttime: open the window,
hear the hum of passing cars,

trains that sing like phantoms
no photograph could cradle,

a wind in your bones
(as hollow as wings).

Pull the highway, the tracks
like threads: all things collapse –

this moment is all moments
and none are yours to hold:

voices you won’t hear again,
old cats learning new scents,
decals in the windows, cracks in the walls,
sunflowers that bloom for decades.

You have always been under these blankets.
You have always been leaving.
