out now: my Beauty & the Beast-inspired queer cozy horror THE LORD OF THE WOOD to celebrate, here are some highlights from a bookish photo shoot I did yesterday! paperback or ebook: bookshop.org/p/books/the-... audiobook: libro.fm/audiobooks/9...
A white person's hand holds up a paperback of E.M. Anderson's The Lord of the Wood in front of a clear, shallow stream running through a green forest. The book's cover is blue, paler in the center, darker at the edges, with a central image of a stag of foliage and flowers growing from a tree whose upper branches drip black ooze and the tagline, "Even a beastly woodland protector needs saving..." This book is featured in all the remaining images.A paperback of E.M. Anderson's The Lord of the Wood standing on a small rock, leaning against a larger rock behind it, in the middle of a clear, shallow stream with light glancing off the water.A closeup of underripe bright red aggregate berries on a twig, with a paperback of E.M. Anderson's The Lord of the Wood gently blurred lying on the grass below.

E.M. Anderson's The Lord of the Wood. The cover was blue, paler in the center and darker at the edges, with a central image of a stag of foliage and flowers growing from a tree whose upper branches drip black ooze and the tagline, "Even a beastly woodland protector needs saving..."The first page of E.M. Anderson's The Lord of the Wood, with the heading, "30 years ago." Text reads:
It had been an awful day. Most days were awful for twelve-year-old Arthur Throckmorton. In the seaside fishing village of Seacliff, where most boys his age were already strapping and calloused from working the sea with their fathers, Arthur was a slender pink thing with soft hands, a mop of golden hair, and watery blue eyes behind wire-rimmed spectacles that never sat quite right.
This late summer evening, his spectacles were more crooked than ever, having been forcibly removed, peered through, jeered at, and stomped on. The frames had bent; miraculously, the lenses had not broken. Arthur had been walking home from the convent after lessons, forgetful of his usual care because Mother Superior, aware of his deep interest in timepieces, had given him an old clock that no longer worked. He’d been trying to figure out what was wrong with it when a group of boys hardly older than he had accosted him. It was difficult to say what, precisely, their gripe with Arthur was, but almost everyone in the village found him odd. He didn’t understand why, except for his bastard status and a vague feeling of difference.
He’d snuck past his mother on the way into the house, bruised, bloody, with bent glasses. If she saw him like that (again), she’d fuss and worry. Rather than joining her in the [text cuts off]

it's #PrideMonth so here's some info about the queer rep in my books! - THE LORD OF THE WOOD (cozy horror, out July 21) - THE KEEPER OF LONELY SPIRITS (cozy fantasy, out now) - THE REMARKABLE RETIREMENT OF EDNA FISHER (contemporary fantasy, currently out of print) www.elizmanderson.com
"E.M. Anderson's The Lord of the Wood: 43-year-old undiagnosed autistic man discovering his sexuality; 8-year-old girl who thinks kissing is gross; gay shapeshifter who keeps getting stuck with various animal parts; unapologetic, slightly slutty lesbian; 12-year-old anxious nonbinary kid; deeply closeted 36-year-old sapphic." The Lord of the Wood's cover is blue, paler in the center, darker at the edges, with a central image of a stag of foliage and flowers growing from a tree whose upper branches drip black ooze and the tagline, "Even a beastly woodland protector needs saving..." Cover and text are against a deep blue textured background."E.M. Anderson's The Keeper of Lonely Spirits: old extremely anxious gay-demi man cursed with immortality; bi-questioning 13-year-old boy; gay ADHD ghost; 72-year-old non-cursed gay man with a collection of stylish waistcoats; historical bi man; early 30s depressed lesbian; early 30s nonbinary person." The Keeper of Lonely Spirits's cover features a lonely cottage, surrounded by headstones, with smoke drifting from the chimney, atop a tall green hill dotted with trees and yellow flowers, against a starry sky, with the tagline, "Living forever can be mighty lonesome..." Cover and text are against a deep green textured background."E.M. Anderson's The Remarkable Retirement of Edna Fisher, currently out of print." Instead of a book cover, this slide features character art of Benjamin, a tall young Black man in an orange shirt, jeans, and boots, with short black hair, an anxious expression, and his hands clenched in front of him; Edna, a short, fat old white woman in a blue housedress, glasses, and loafers, with a cane in one hand, knitting in the other, and a gray perm, grinning; and Clem, a short, athletic Latina teen turned slightly away from the other two, with long, dark, curly hair, a scowl, and her arms folded, wearing a green V-neck, gray cardigan, jeans, and green Converse. The character art is by (at) SoundOfMind. Benjamin is labeled "anxious gay man who loves all things magical." Edna is labeled "questioning ace old lady." Clem is labeled "baby bi-ace with PTSD." Additional text about characters not pictured here reads, "48-year-old ace man with PTSD; gray-ace queer elf; ace old man possibly on aro spectrum; sapphic half-fae girl." Text and character art are on a white background.

this blurb comes from the queen of my heart @wordsiren.bsky.social , whose birthday it was yesterday so you should wish her happy birthday if you haven't already. coincidentally, her dark academia AN ARCANE INHERITANCE is ALSO one of the best books of 2026*, so be sure to check it out!
blurb for The Lord of the Wood from Kamilah Cole, USA Today and national indie bestselling author of An Arcane Inheritance: “E.M. Anderson has delivered another gorgeous and heartwarming tale rooted in love—for one's family, for one's partner, and for one's self . . . One of the best books of 2026, hands down.” Blurb is in a textbox against a five-photo collage featuring images of a snowy forest, a lone oak silhouetted against a cloudy sky, a misty forest, a human eye veined in black, and a close-up of a stag's eye and antlers, showing flowers growing over his eye, moss in his fur, and autumn leaves in his antlers. The covers of An Arcane Inheritance by Kamilah Cole and The Lord of the Wood by E.M. Anderson in a translucent yellow box against the backdrop of pink flowers blooming on a tree. An Arcane Inheritance's cover is dark, an imposing gray tower against a reddish-black sky, with darkening clouds and distant evergreens in the background, and a backwards E in a circle at the top. The Lord of the Wood's cover is blue, with a central image of a stag of foliage and flowers growing from a tree whose upper branches drip black ooze and the tagline "even a beastly woodland protector needs saving..."
