Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Kind of both, in that it was absolutely bunk science, but standardized science was generally a new thing so they were kind of just trying things lol. Major universities stayed clear of it, but spiritualists did hold lectures and had tons of newspapers and things. THEY saw themselves as scientists. 020
Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 01/10/2026They begin theorizing earnestly about ghost biology in the 19th century! The end result by the end of the century is ectoplasm, largely bc spiritualists believed ghosts could be manifested if the right test conditions for their biology could be established. 110
Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Admittedly I have skin in the game here but more scifi ghosts please ❤️ 120
Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 01/10/2026#SFFChat i find it sooo interesting to think about ghosts in the future and how such an ancient concept adapts to technology. How will we conceive of the soul 1000 years from now you know? 192
Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 01/10/2026#SFFChat my name is Lin, I write queer genre bendy sff, and I love ghosts! I wrote my PhD dissertation on how ghosts get goopy in the 19th century thanks to science. 191

Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 16/09/2026I think there's a difference in writing between characters who are sexy and who are physically attractive and everyone assumes the first comes from the second but oh boy it DOESN'T. 030

Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 01/09/2026It’s really underrated as actual literature and not just Christmas feelgoodedness! I was looking at it through the lens of Thing Theory specifically (and just a chapter of my diss, sadly, I was going for brevity with my original comment) ❤️ 080
Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 31/08/2026I think the grey is especially found in how he unspools Scrooge’s self serving logic as invisibly exploitative, but it ruins his life, too! Hoarded wealth is anathema to true humanity! Like, rad!! Cool one Dickens!! 230
Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 31/08/2026Still thinking about this hours later tbh! The scene where Scrooge’s own utilitarian arguments are thrown back against him seems so significant? “Are there not poorhouses?” Also “mankind was my business!” rejects the logic of the capitalist using the capitalist’s own language. 040
Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 31/08/2026I wrote a PhD dissertation on the book and I think the coolest thing it says is that you *will have actually have* 100 logical reasons to keep your wealth but none of them are good enough if they're causing suffering and pain and you could be preventing that. Did billionaires produce this? 332413
Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 31/08/2026As someone who wrote a dissertation on A Christmas Carol... the point is not that Scrooge doesn't have technically LOGICAL reasons for exploiting his workers, but that we all have a MORAL responsibility towards our fellow man. 281

Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 24/07/2026This is going to sound like the most obnoxious humble brag but today I found out from my doctor that I literally gave so much blood it made me anemic. Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 25/06/2026Everyone who works in visual mediums needs to rediscover old technicolor films and realize they don't just pulse with color and fashion and stylization, they also sometimes have plots that involve things like cursed marriages, champagne beds and Paul Newman exploding. Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 22/06/2026Happy Pride month! My book is very Queer and features demisexual librarians wooing reformed gangsters AND nonbinary musicians falling in love with emotionally repressed polar explorers. Also they're all technologically-resurrected ghosts. 01711
Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 17/06/2026if in 2026 we could kill the trope of "corsets are the ultimate symbols of patriarchal oppression" i'd really love that or at least, if you REALLY want to go for it, you should write an essay on why your 21st century underwear are superior soldiers in the gender war 040

Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 14/06/2026This just made a list erupt in my head of Criterion movies I'd kill for rule 63 versions of: The Apartment, Le Circle Rouge, Creature from the Black Lagoon!!! Dunno why my mind went to those three specifically. 000
Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 14/06/2026Because it just tracks so well to the themes of performativity and love and the rituals of heterosexual desire!! That to me would be a genuinely interesting way to Queer the text (not to shade the National Theater here but). Please somebody in the theater take this on and film it!! 010
Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 14/06/2026I am actually desperate for an Importance of Being Earnest adaptation where Jack and Gwendolyn are played by women and Algernon and Cecily are men (or visa-versa) without changing anything in the script. And Lady Bracknell is a nonbinary actor. 220
Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 12/06/2026Curious if there are any enemies to lovers books out there where they STAY enemies because they actually genuinely like being at-odds? Or do the romance genre rules imply the enmity is smoothed out? 040
