I was inspired to do this vibe comp grid for my upcoming book, Dead New World! It's spooky, it's noirish, it's funny, it's Queer, it's romantic, it's got ghosts AND cyber kidnappings... I was really trying hard to bend every genre.
Dead New World. Nov 2026. Vibe Comp Grid.
The grids:
1) The cover of Murderbot, a cyborg looking at the viewer.
2) A screenshot from The Fabulous Baron Munchausen, where a ghostly figure gestures to a dinner party on the moon.
3) A screenshot from the terror, when a diver goes beneath the artic sea and is surrounded by eerie colors and floating ice.
4) A screenshot from Tron of a man in a holographic suit.
5) A blurb that reads Queer, Funny, Romantic, Ghostly, Cybernoir, Mystery.
6) A screenshot from Bladerunner 2049 of a giant holographic woman pointing.
7) A screenshot from Beetlejuice of a book that reads HANDBOOK FOR THE RECENTLY DECEASED.

Everyone who works in visual mediums needs to rediscover old technicolor films and realize they don't just pulse with color and fashion and stylization, they also sometimes have plots that involve things like cursed marriages, champagne beds and Paul Newman exploding. (What A Way to Go!, 1964)
Poster for 1964's What a Way to Go!, featuring Shirley Maclaine in a glittering dress surrounded by several husbands in striped colors of red, yellow and grey.A man and woman embrace in a champagne glass bed.A woman in a yellow fur embraces her lover before a white car and blue background.A woman lounges by a pool on a lounger, everything except her is monochrome pink.

Academic Disney Con't. Alright did you guys know that there's a Macbeth quote in Disney's Beauty and the Beast and it's used in such a rich and layered and gendered way I actually had to break out the timestamps for this one. Review: letterboxd.com/wisteriajone...

Academic Disney Con't. Okay I wrote so much about PROFESSOR RATIGAN as the embodiment of internalized Otherness and the moral degradation required to rise socially. I can't even fit the whole thing in a single screencap. TOO MUCH TO SAY ABOUT THIS RAT. Full review: letterboxd.com/wisteriajone...

#ShaderunnersReRead Also from the script: "It’s not a romantic kiss—it’s the kiss of someone who desperately needs to anchor himself to what he has, because he’s just lost a lot."
A man in a suit desperately kisses another man in a boa a turtleneck in the 1920s party scenario, the atmosphere fraught, surrounded by cigarette smoke.

#ShaderunnersReRead From the script: "Ezra descends, looking haggard and dragging his suitcase, also wearing a satchel. Easton has perhaps placed himself here to catch him first."
A man wearing a boa says "Fashionably late, huh?" to a man entering a basement room with a suitcase and worried look.

Vibe comps but make it funny. Think Murderbot x Beetlejuice.
A man submerged dreamily beneath an ice-covered ship in a dive suit. From AMC's The Terror.A holographic woman leans over a man looking up at her. From Bladerunner 2049.Two people in glowing blue suits in a virtual space. From Tron.Ghostly figures beckon you closer to a dreamy dinner table in deep saturated interstellar colours. From The Fabulous Baron Munschausen.

#ShaderunnersReRead. Maybe one of the only moments in the comic where Easton and Ezra just have a cute flirt and set aside their psychosexual philosophical obsessions with one another for just like a SECOND. Enemies to enemies who kiss.

#ShaderunnersReRead. I love it when @alexassanart takes relationships that aren't romantic but makes them FEEL romantic. The romance of conning rich people into thinking you're a ghost. Makes a bond.

Lin Darrow @lindarrow.bsky.social · 04/06/2026
Gonna start porting over some #ShaderunnersReRead tweets from X! First: Easton shifts probably the most over the first act, from someone deliberately provoking into someone whose relationship with class is equal parts longing and resentment. His relationship with Ezra is a mirror of that.

I think this goes for all art, honestly. Also it's just fun to discover stuff and learn about its original context. (Also x 2, if animators discovered technicolor film they'd be unstoppable...)

My Reading List for May 2026 has absolutely no theme, I was truly reading like a little chrome ball in a pinball machine, flinging itself between chiming bumpers. (Summaries and links in alt text!)
Cover of Strange Pictures by Uketsu. A Japanese mystery bestseller, revolving around a series of creepy drawings, in which the reader is the detective. Link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/219579130-strange-picturesCover for Marie Antoinette by Antonia Fraser. France's iconic queen, Marie Antoinette, wrongly accused of uttering the infamous "Let them eat cake," was alternately revered and reviled during her lifetime. For centuries since, she has been the object of debate, speculation, and the fascination so often accorded illustrious figures in history. Married in mere girlhood, this essentially lighthearted child was thrust onto the royal stage and commanded by circumstance to play a significant role in European history. Antonia Fraser's lavish and engaging portrait excites compassion and regard for all aspects of the queen, immersing the reader not only in the coming-of-age of a graceful woman, but in the culture of an unparalleled time and place. Link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6110185-marie-antoinetteCover for Greater Secrets by Ananth Hirsh and Tess Stone. In a family gifted with the ability to see a mysterious light in the distance, one teen embarks on a fantastical journey to find her missing sister, and finally answer the question: is this ancestral gift a blessing or a curse? Link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/208430669-greater-secretsAngelica and the Bear Prince by Trung Le Nguyen. At her lowest point, a teen girl finds solace and a potential crush in her local theater's mascot's DMs, sparking a quest to uncover the true identity of this mysterious figure. From the bestselling author of The Magic Fish comes a new fairy tale romance with a twist. Link: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/223854914-angelica-and-the-bear-prince

Disney Academia project continues apace. A short one this time, about Winnie the Pooh and ephemerality.
A review of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977) that reads: "Captures the ephemeral and incidental nature of childhood—long days meandering through an unknowable world of adult detritus, your concerns so small, your fears so random and shapeless, your world so fragile a gust of wind can literally blow it over; childhood as an ambiguous blend of one season of nothing into another until it’s time to leave. Simple but I think this one just really speaks to little kids and their rambling worlds."Winnie the Pooh, a soft yellow bear with a red shirt, sits by a fire pointing to a misspelled sign that reads RNIG ALSO.

My mom, my sister and I all following the same painting of a lighthouse tutorial in the same room…
Painting one is fuzzy and pink, painting two is a meticulously followed lighthouse with the lighthouse getting painted out for being too inevitably phallic, and a zany abstract reinterpretation of the lighthouse being a cabin under a sun made out of egg yolk.

Disney Academia continues. The Aristocats is about the arbitrary nature of wealth. Actually think I was cooking with this one. Are all these movies about class?! letterboxd.com/wisteriajone...
A review from Letterboxd: A movie that reveals the arbitrary insularity of aristocratic wealth, where the purebred cats of a wealthy woman are seen as more deserving to inherit than her loyal working class servant. To force your cats to inherit first, a ridiculously symbolic and incoherent gesture, is ultimately ensuring that Edgar can only access that wealth via proxy, rendering him literally lesser than animals. Aristocracy is such an absurd state of being that it requires these elaborate rituals to contain wealth within its proper class brackets. It doesn’t matter that he inherits after their deaths—the message is clearly one of knowing your place and never forgetting that any rise you attain has been indulgently granted by your higher ups. Edgar is effectively Madam’s pet, and not even the most beloved one.

Similarly, Duchess is so functionally inept in the real world that Thomas O’Malley must effectively do everything for her: rescue her children, lead her home, manage transportation, mobilize relationships, expose scheming servants and save them from multiple perils. He tries to tell Duchess that she is just the house pet and not a full person to Madam, and this message is one the film seems incapable of fully rebutting. The aristocracy as a class are pampered cats who, dangerously, see others as THEIR pets. Even at the end, the cats are adopted into Madam’s house as part of her philanthropy: her “foundation.” There is no true equality between the classes!!!!!

Cats cute tho.

So people are livestreaming a virtual recreation of the sinking of the Titanic on the day of its sinking and I find it such an interesting phenomenon. People really want to memorialize (and, for some no doubt, spectate) this event from 1912 in such a specific and embodied way.
