An old comic from 2021 about being an alien

An idea that pushes me forward.
Rambling about how the type of mimic I've created has an interesting potential to connect people. It's a physical creature that manifests perspective, and can be used to acknowledge other people's unique takes on this setting.

The way you draw is different from the way I draw, so if my character interacts with yours, this type of mimic can reflect your style. And if you want to tinker with the core mechanics of the setting, they can also reflect that.

And even if I can never figure out how to kick off this chemical reaction so to say, they create incredibly opportunities to differentiate characters even when alone, since every character sees the world differently, and the mimic will reflect that.

Looking forward to the day I figure out how to communicate this all effectively...

Weywot takes a bite of their sandwich-ish, only to discover that it tastes awful. They lift it up toward Dima, who responds "no thanks, your sandwiches taste like ass."
Weywot puts down the sandwich-ish, "This is her idea of my idea of a sandwich."

Liminal is such a good word. It has two major definitions. 1. In-between, transitional. 2. On the edge of perception The first definition is the common one. Liminal spaces. But the second one I love. By that definition, cryptids can be described as liminal. Bigfoot's one blurry photograph.

ish
Panel 1 - Weywot points at a screwed up toaster oven and explains that its disguise is easy to see through because its concept wasn't fully formed.
Panel 2 - Weywot exposes the toaster oven's gills and explains that its a type of fungus called an Ishroom, or just "ish".
Panel 3 - Weywot explains that the toaster-oven-ish and the table it's on are both ish. But they don't copy objects. They copy concepts. The toaster-oven-ish is probably based on the concept held by a traveler.
Panels 4 and 5 - Weywot produces a grilled sandwich ish and explains that ish grow in areas appropriate for their muse. The sandwich was found on a hot stone outside, and the previous ones were sound in an abandoned house. They then sign off to go eat it.

What is our scale?
A question dropped in Tumblr - It compares humans to the planck unit and then asks what size creatures in this setting are compared to theirs

#furryart #worldbuildingBefore Weywot can answer the question, they have to establish the concept of a scaler. There is no limit like the Planck scale. Scalers are tools or creatures made smaller, with the purpose of moving more quickly and manipulating smaller materials, to create more scalers for the same purpose. The smaller something is, the faster it moves and thinks. These things move at a casual pace from their own perspective. But returning to the original question, Planck isn't actually a limit. It's what they call a scaling barrier. It's the same concept as space travel was to us, before we had the technology to cross that barrier, except it's theorized that the planck scale represents a gap between scales, at which the next largest objects after quarks and such, is so incredibly small and fast that we can't hope to manipulate them with our technology.
It's possible a new technology will appear to help us cross that barrier, or that our universe's chemistry is simply bad for it, in which case you would have to first scale up or contact a scaler already above you.
Scaling up is the process of building networks that act as larger creatures. It's what we did to get from microbes to multicellular animals, and what we're doing going from animals to cities, to nations, to planets, and eventually to galactic civilizations. It takes a long time.
All that to say, Weywot has no clue where we are relative to them in the dimension of scale, but notes that the similarities found between our environments suggests relatively high proximity.

Q: What does your species name "Pretzel" mean?
Q: What does Pretzel mean?
Weywot: It's from an old word meaning "Arms"
(The fact that the word has similar etymology in their universe as in ours is purely coincidental)

Species reference for Pretzels! Feel free to make your own!
Swimming
Since all species in Liminal Velocity have metal bones, swimming is usually impossible. Pretzels overcome this weakness with webbing and impressive muscles. A rebreather organ in their snout also helps increase submersion time.
Reproduction: Despite having 5 distinct sexes, Pretzels exhibit no physical sexual dimorphism, often leading them to view sex similarly to how humans view blood types. (there's a complicated diagram I'm not going to explain in detail for a while, including x, y, z, xz, and yz)
Tail: Pretzel tails are typically stubby and muscular, aiding in swimming, but due to a higher succeptibility for mutation in this anatomy, they occasionally exhimit alternate tail shapes.

Other notes: They got no nostrils or sense of smell. Sharp teeth. Black eartips, and webbing between their fingers and toes and under their arms.

@liminalvelocity - Tonight I realized the view from the top of my hill looks like the setting I'm developing for Liminal Velocity. The city lights look like planets and you can see extra bright ones along the highway network. I'm on the outside of a sphere looking down on it.

Moul Species Reference
Moul (pronounced like "mouth") - Making up for a lack of upper limbs, a moul's entire surface is covered in cilia-like hairs, which allow a moul to grip and freely manipulate objects in contact with its body. (image of one touching a ball and the ball sliding up around their body onto the tip of their raised foot) - This feature is used to hold clothing and camoflage, to scale vertical surfaces, and to passively bring food to their mouths. - Their mouths, located on the upper back, contain a filter material similar to baleen in whales. Mouls primarily consume fungal spores, but are known to catch and eat smaller creatures as well. - Their "ears" are also not ears. Their horns are just covered in fur. Sorry ear-lovers.

Here are the basics of the Liminal Velocity universe:
Most of the universe is dark and hostile to life. Spheres are the exception (they're bubbles of safe space) This is where habitable planets can be found. Spheres travel through space on predictable paths. Planets remain stationary relative to their sphere. - Interplanetary travel using Subspace Warp Highways is commonplace. If you don't pay too much attention during the trip, the experience is not much different from traveling down a regular road. - These warp highways are created by a fungal entity known as Highway Mimic. Similar to how classic mimics imitate treasure chests, Highway Mimic imitates Travel. It uses the expectations and memories of travelers to shape the highways features.

Rau Explains Stuff (2/?)
"Lets start with planets!" - "Want me to just list the important ones? Or like, what they're made of, or... you do have planets, right?" - The odd figure shows Rau Earth "This is our planet. 196 Million square miles. Over 8 billion inhabitants. - "Oh"

#furryart #webcomics #worldbuildingRau is momentarily stunned, trying to work out the implications of what she saw - "Oh. Right. Our planets are a lot smaller than yours. Like 4 miles diameter instead of 8,000." "Huh? Did I do this?" - Rau is holding a small planet in front of her. "This is Velocity. My home planet. Not to scale, obviously." She produces a circular grid with dots connected by lines "This is my sphere. The dots are planets and the lines are Velocity's warp highway network." She then produces a series of rings with those spheres on them "And here's everything. We've mapped four major spheres and a few hundred smaller ones. The space outside spheres is extremely hot and dark, so this is a view you can't get in reality."

Lets pluck Rau out of setting for a bit, for questioning.
Rau, on a planet's surface, gets distorted and then finds herself in an empty white void, in front of a somewhat ghostly character.

#furryart #webcomics"Don't worry. You're not dead. I'm not a threat. I brought you here to answer questions about your reality.""The reality I come from is very different from yours. Just give us some insight into how it all works and I'll have you back in the desert before a second of your time passes." - Rau: "Huh I guess if I'm not totally here that explains why I'm sort of pseudo-naked. Alright I'll answer some questions. Where do we begin?"

Rau gives into the urge to grab snake. (Mostly true story)

These comics were drawn before Rau joined Liminal Velocity, but the only real hint you'd get to that is the amount of horizon in the distance.

Many of Rau's old comics didn't make the transition to bluesky. Let's change that! (This one is actually a true story, btw)
First comic appearance of Rau. She's sitting on a dock with a salamander in her paw. "Wanna join me as I write my journal for today?" - a friend approached in a canoe and splashes her, so she throws the salamander and it hits his face - crying: "You got my journal wet AND YOU MADE ME THROW MY SALAMANDER!"

This is a 100% true story from my life, btw. This comic began as an opportunity for me to revisit (and sometimes alter) memories from years before I began drawing Dogstomp.

What if I just started unceremoniously dumping lore and world building. What if I made stories with details I'm not sure about? What if I post stuff that will later be incorrect. Non-canon. Discarded. Updated. Sounds like more fun than waiting until I'm sure.

On the left is a Pretzel named Whirl, and on the right is one named Starch.
Most notable features of Pretzels are their very large Lugia-like hands, and round moomin-like nose. Inside their nose is an organ that fills with water and acts like a rebreather, allowing them to stay submerged for up to an hour. They have no sense of smell.
