Air Quality Alert issued June 3 at 3:24PM EDT by NWS Gray ME Additional Details Here.
The Maine Department of Environmental Protection's Bureau of Air
Quality has issued an Air Quality Alert for ozone from 11 AM
Wednesday to 11 PM EDT Thursday.

Ozone levels are expected to rise into the Unhealthy for Sensitive
Groups range on Wednesday, June 4th and Thursday, June 5th.

In addition, particle pollution levels are expected to be moderate
statewide due to wildfire smoke.

It is important to remember that even in areas with moderate levels
of ozone and particle pollution, the health impacts will be
compounded by the effects of heat and humidity.

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection recommends that
individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to
reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be
especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants
include the very young, the elderly, those with pre-existing
respiratory problems such as asthma, those with heart disease and
anyone who is working hard outdoors. It is okay to be active
outdoors. But if you experience symptoms such as shortness of
breath, coughing, throat irritation or an uncomfortable sensation in
your chest please consider limiting the intensity and duration of
your outdoor activities.

A toll free air quality hotline has been established so Maine
residents can stay informed on the air quality situations. The toll
free number is: 1-800-223-1196.

Additionally the Maine Department of Environmental Protection has
the air quality forecast available on the web at
www.maine.gov/dep/air/aqforecast.

The National Climate Assessment is the premier comprehensive review and assessment of climate change, its impacts, and solutions for the United States. The report is vetted by the public and the scientific community, written to be accessible to decision makers, and is not policy prescriptive. The current version, the Fifth National Climate Assessment (NCA5), was published in November 2023 and available at
https://nca2023.globalchange.gov/. Our
speaker was the lead author on the Southern Great Plains chapter of NCA5.
She will discuss the main messages of
NCA5 and examples of how the report
can be used at the local level.Dr. Renee A. McPherson is a full professor of Geography and
Environmental Sustainability at the University of Oklahoma and University
Director of the South Central Climate
Adaptation Science Center. She holds a B.S. in Mathematics and a B.S, M.S., and Ph.D. in Meteorology. Her research includes the societal and ecological impacts of climate variability and change, regional and applied
climatology, and severe local storms.
She teaches classes in climatology and physical geography, advises graduate
students in their research and
education, and mentors undergraduate students who are interested in research opportunities. Formerly, she was State Climatologist of Oklahoma and Acting Director of the Oklahoma Climatological Survey. In January 2019, she received the Charles E. Anderson Award from the American Meteorological Society for her
"extraordinary, sustained efforts to broaden participation of traditionally underrepresented individuals in STEM research and education, particularly women and Native Americans." In 2024, she received the Regents' Award for Superior Professional and University Service and Public Outreach from the University of Oklahoma. She served as Lead Author of the Southern Great Plains chapter of the Fifth National

The single most impactful thing we can do combat climate change is to talk about it. That’s why, this Earth Day, we are doubling down on our mission: to foster a welcoming and inclusive community the encourages, inspires, and empowers scientists to engage in climate outreach and communication.

For April’s Speaker Series, we have Feleecia Guillen speaking on Building Power for Campus Climate Action at the University of New Mexico. This will take place on Zoom on Thursday, April 3rd at 2 pm ET / 1 pm CT / 12 pm MT. Register here: osu.zoom.us/meeting/regi...
The Climate Consensus

Speaker: Feleecia Guillen
Director of Outreach & Communication
Director of Environmental Affairs

Building Power for Campus Climate Action: Youth-Led Organizing, Divestment,
Advocacy & Student Leadership at the University of New Mexico

The climate crisis is deeply connected to environmental and social justice, particularly in New Mexico, where frontline
communities face the severe impacts of fossil fuel
extraction, water contamination, and corporate exploitation.
UNM Leaders for Environmental Action and Foresight (LEAF) is organizing to ensure that the University of New Mexico takes bold and urgent steps toward sustainability and justice, recognizing that universities have a responsibility to lead in climate action. Given that New Mexico's youth are leading this movement-challenging decision-makers, advocating for a just transition away from fossil fuels, and resisting false solutions that harm their communities-students at UNM are mobilizing to ensure the university is not complicit in climate destruction but instead serves as a model for sustainability and climate leadership. This talk will highlight how student-led organizing is driving climate action at UNM and its connection to the broader environmental justice movement
in New Mexico. UNM LEAF is pushing the university to declare a climate emergency, commit to a waste-free and carbon-free campus, divest from fossil fuels, and invest in just and sustainable education. Through advocacy, coalition-building, and strategic outreach, students are demanding real institutional change. This presentation will share key organizing strategies, challenges, and successes, providing insight into how student activism can drive systemic change and help shape a just and livable future in New Mexico.

Thursday, April 3rd
2:00 PM ET / 1:00 PM CT / 12:00 PM MT on ZOOM

Register here: https://osu.zoom.us/meeting/register/iJRBTK3-Q4i-PDhn-kbNMQ#/registrationThe Climate Consensus

Speaker: Feleecia Guillen
Director of Outreach & Communication
Director of Environmental Affairs

Feleecia Guillen is a senior at UNM, majoring in Business and Spanish with minors in Sustainability Studies and Psychology. Raised in rural NM, where water accessibility issues profoundly shaped her perspective, she developed
a deep connection to both her environment and community. As a proud Chicana and Nuevomexicana, her Indigenous roots deeply connect her to Mother Nature, grounding and guiding her work. Feleecia is actively involved in various organizing efforts across New Mexico, tackling environmental injustices from uranium mining to the proposed Strategic Water Supply. As the Director of Outreach & Communication for UNM Leaders for Environmental Action and Foresight (UNM LEAF), the Director of Environmental Affairs for Associated Students at the University of New Mexico (ASUNM), the New Mexico
Youth Climate Summit Project
Coordinator for Talking Talons, and a Steering Committee Member for Youth
United for Climate Crisis Action
(YUCCA), Feleecia is a driving force behind advocating for real and just climate solutions. She also collaborates with organizations like Food & Water Watch and No False Solutions, working to amplify the voices of marginalized
communities and push for
environmental justice and collective
liberation.

Over the last decade, 90% of American counties have been impacted by extreme weather disasters. Without the data, tools, and expertise from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), proactive mitigation of the worst extreme weather events would not be possible.
