Did you know that at any given time, each hemisphere on Earth contains three to five atmospheric rivers (ARs)? ARs, first noticed by researchers in the 1990s, are long but not wide, and play a major part in the distribution of water and energy across the globe.
The Climate Consensus Fun Fact Friday graphic about atmospheric rivers. A map of the United States shows contrasting trends in atmospheric river (AR) frequency, with blue shading over parts of the West Coast and red shading over much of the eastern United States. An accompanying illustration depicts atmospheric circulation around low- and high-pressure systems. The graphic explains that the gradient between the low and high pressure systems create a narrow channel where the flow of water vapor occurs during an AR event. Research suggests that increasing high-pressure systems along both U.S. coasts over the past four decades may help explain opposing trends in atmospheric river frequency, with implications for precipitation in a warming climate.

What is it? El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in which sea surface temperatures in the Central and Eastern tropical Pacific are anomalously warm, and the easterly trade winds are weaker.
2026 Atlantic hurricane season has been less active than average, largely due to El Nino. The Pacific, however is oppositely impacted by El Nino. Hawaii has been impacted by two damaging storms this season.

Did you know that 30% of the U.S. population lives along coastlines? With the threat of sea level rise as a result of climate change, high tide flooding is increasing along these coasts. New research now shows that human-caused sea level rise drives 80% of days with coastal flooding in the U.S.

Although you might be quick to blame excessive screen time, caffeine, or an elevated heart rate on your lack of quality sleep, don’t be so quick to rule out climate change. As nighttime temperatures become warmer, the body’s ability to cool itself as you sleep is now disrupted.

All hope is not lost when it comes to the decline of coral reefs due to mass coral bleaching events. This is because scientists recently discovered over 64,000 square miles (nearly a third of the world’s reef systems) of coral reefs they believe can withstand future warming.

When Tropical Cyclones (TCs) recurve up the East Coast, the heaviest rainfall doesn’t always fall under the storm’s main rain shield. Sometimes, it shows up well ahead of the storm, in a completely separate location. This is called a Predecessor Rainfall Event (PRE), first defined by Cote (2007).

While attribution science doesn’t tell us whether an event would or would not have happened in a world without human-caused warming, it does tell us how much more severe the event was because of climate change. For example, multiple attribution studies were conducted after Hurricane Helene in 2024.

The US Forest Service was first established in 1905 and has since grown to steward over 150 national forests and 20 national grasslands totaling over 190 million acres. When we think of national forests, we often think of recreation: hiking, exploring, camping, picnicking, and so much more.

Satellites are crucial for scientific study in the Antarctic because the environment there is not only inhospitable to human life, but it is also very difficult to get there. This means the amount of research that can be conducted onsite is limited.

Shared Socio-economic Pathways, or SSPs, are scenarios that represent the variety of challenges facing climate change adaptation and mitigation.
The Climate Consensus Fun Fact Friday. Figure1 shows 5 different shared socio-economic pathways and the degree of warming for each. From SSP1 to SSP5, the warming increases drastically. The figure on the right shows two SSPs and the degree of warming for each from 1950 to 2100. The more extreme SSP leads to over double the warming of the less extreme SSP.

This week’s FFF post is not fun, but it is important! We often discuss how we see climate change impacts by looking at trends across the world. What is sometimes not highlighted is what these impacts can do to human health.
The Climate Consensus fun fact friday. We know human-caused climate change disproportionately affects the most vulnerable populations-- this includes children. Children are at greater risk from weather-related hazards, including extreme heat, lengthening pollen seasons, reduced air quality, and extreme weather events. These hazards pose a serious risk to children’s physical and mental health. In fact, experts state that children and adolescents are facing a mental health emergency, which is exacerbated by climate change impacts. Read below for more information and some resources on how to protect kids’ health.
