You have a handful of people within the community gently shepherding people away from these beliefs, and that's literally the only guardrail, because otherwise society doesn't care about these people.

There's a real interesting phenomenon of psychologized magic behavior that I see in very specific communities of people who already have mental health issues. And it's one of those things we don't talk about in public cause nobody from the outside is going to help, we have to help within.

all web writing should be markdown. Idk why some things kinda accept markdown and some dont. But I copy and paste something from outlook web into a markdown doc and it looks like garbage.

I feel like this is an easy problem. Create an honorarium account. Create a form. Department submits form to the honorarium account with info of who, how much, and what fund to pull money from to go to the honorarium account. Honorarium account cuts a physical check, sends to address.

I talk to webcomic artist Nick Vost aka Foolibuster. We uncover the deep lore of the Abuse Goblin in this hard-hitting list of mind-bending expositions. #4 will shock you! hausofdecline.ca/podcast
Katie and Nick have a rousing conversation, their faces rendered like Nick's White Boys using AAE comiv. The Abuse Goblin is in the background on the mixer, looking sad.

If library management wasn't so busy fighting its workers and their unions they could get together for some common talking points to their funders

I do agree with having communications staff. Police get funding cause they invest in propaganda for their own departments.

I forgot how nice the review of us was in JLSC
The librarypunk podcast strikes a good balance between education and entertainment. With a
wide range of topics and guests, there is something for everyone in librarianship who is interested in delving into subject matter from leftist social, political, and economic perspectives.
The hosts posit interesting questions, some of which, of course, lack conclusive responses. The
podcast’s punk nonconformist, anti-authoritarianist spirit fosters a nontraditional way of dis
cussing librarianship. To be clear, “punk” does not imply that topics covered are not presented
in a scholarly way. On the contrary, the hosts take time to educate listeners, and each other, on
the topic of the week. Although the hosts claim it is not a professional podcast, the content
presented can be used to help advance library practices and improve the field as a whole.
Accepting that librarianship is not neutral, and that all systems are biased, has the potential
to open wider conversations and actually induce change. It is highly recommended to subscribe to librarypunk.

As I've said before, corporate actors like OpenAI are regularly taking down open research and publishing infrastructures – journals, books, archives, repositories – with complete impunity. Their bots don't even respect robots.txt requests.

Maybe releasing critical editions of really famous books like that would be useful, but copyright would get in the way. Dr. Emily Knox emphasized when we had her on that there's not a great blanket solution other than a liberal toleration of a wide range of books, including fascist ones.

What got me thinking about it was when we were talking about the rights of children to read and know things, and we talked about creating healthy barriers that we expect children to overcome as part of their growing up.

I've barely published about piracy in the library world and I feel like one day it'll come to a head and I'll have to talk about it as a response to a particular set of circumstances.

The problem with being good at piracy is it also makes me a bad librarian sometimes when I just bypass a paywall instead of making ILL requests and purchase requests. But if one thing I've learned about evading barriers, is that it's an essential skill everyone

Lots of both sidesing when the anti Black and anti queer stuff is front and center. The lack of focus on public goods, by making it a marketing term for book sales.

librarypunk @librarypunk.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
A couple of reasons it’s difficult to explain in short form writing. The focus on books rather than the people those books are proxies for. The lack of focus on the actual issues behind bans, and instead on a general position of non censorship (which is good but not focused enough)
