The biggest scandal in AI energy right now deserves to be xAI's data center running 35 methane gas turbines that don't need air permits because "temporary" and don't have catalytic reduction pollution controls installed because... they just didn't bother? simonwillison.net/2025/Jun/12/...

Some sad confirmation from @bcgl.bsky.social while I was at UW last week—the National Digital Newspaper Program—which builds Chronicling America—has been shut down Historical newspapers are probably the archival material most used by the general public—for genealogy, local history—it’s such a loss

MORE: Libraries in several states have received letters which claim to cancel federal IMLS grants. Congress MUST act to restore this funding. Read our full statement: www.ala.org/news/2025/04... Use your voice - call Congress to protect & restore library funding: bit.ly/CallCongressForLibraries
"Withdrawing library grants is a callous move at any time, but downright cruel at a time when it's getting harder for many Americans to make ends meet - most of all, in small and rural communities. The White House may have no qualms about slashing opportunity for jobseekers, students, veterans and families, but Congress has the power to restore support for services their constituencies rely on." - ALA President Cindy Hohl.
