Recently (finally) picked up @liamwong.com 's After Dark photo book. I'll spare you bad photos of the images inside, but it's lovely to have a hard copy to just vibe with
Large artbook by Thames & Hudson, cover a photo of the back of a Japanese taxi at night, illuminating the pavement with a trail of red. A narrow, empty urban street stretches away. A logo in kanji on the left, with "Liam Wong After Dark" in red letters.

Tokyo Gradients
Photography by Liam. Train headlights pierce a lattice of blackened rails and power lines, silhouetted against a fading palette of violet and ember-orange twilight, while Mount Fuji rests faintly on the horizon in the center of the frame in the distance obscured by overhead wires. Tokyo rooftops dissolve into shadow beneath a gradient of peach and violet, the skyline reduced to quiet silhouettes against the (colourful) dying light. An emerald supermarket sign glows alone in a wide panoramic photograph, a large electric wire cuts through the frame in front of the electric-blue dusk that fades into a warm horizon glow.Lawson convenience store lights spill into a narrow alley as a distant Mount Fuji emerges in silhouette, framed by shadows and a smoldering sunset sky cut by overhead wires and signs.

Tokyo after dark
Photography by Liam. A fog-shrouded Tokyo high-rise glows with cool blue office lights in the background while a utility pole and electrical transformer dominate the foreground. The scene has mist softening the building’s curved silhouette and creates a quiet, futuristic atmosphere.A glowing clock appears suspended in dense fog between dark office buildings in Tokyo. The illuminated hands indicate approximately 2:55, and the clock face belongs to the NTT Docomo Yoyogi Building, whose structure is largely obscured by mist. The blue-toned scene creates a surreal nighttime atmosphere. An empty Tokyo residential street descends into the distance under a row of white streetlights. Industrial walls, utility poles, and neatly trimmed trees line the wet pavement, emphasizing the stillness of the city.A streetlight mounted on a utility pole glows against a dark blue night sky. Tokyo flow
A solitary commuter stands motionless beneath cold blue station lights as a train streaks past in a blur of steel and lights. The platform feels suspended between departures and destinations, a quiet pause in Tokyo’s endless motion.Three strangers occupy the platform like separate stories sharing the same frame. Bathed in electric blue light, they wait in silence while the city hums around them, connected only by the rhythm of the tracks. Train doors slide open to reveal a wall of faces frozen in anticipation, the train is full. Office workers spill into the light, each carrying their own destination. The station transforms into a living current of silhouettes and briefcases flowing through a sea of blue light. Individual identities dissolve into movement, turning the platform into a cinematic portrait of Tokyo’s pulse.

Seoul after dark
A dark alley glows beneath tangled power lines stretching overhead like veins across the city. A lone streetlamp spills light onto shuttered storefronts while crimson neon leaks into the alley. A narrow backstreet disappears into electric blue haze, its rain-soaked asphalt reflecting streaks of magenta. Neon hotel signs and distant towers hover above the shadows, turning an ordinary alley into a cyberpunk-esque scene with the contrast of architecture between old and new.

Rothko rain in Tokyo
Photography by Liam. Neon reflections on wet asphalt in Tokyo resemble a Rothko painting. Blocks of electric blue, magenta, coral, and ember orange dissolve into one another through rippling reflections, while raindrops stipple the surface like brushstrokes, turning a Tokyo photograph into an abstract field of color and light.Swipe of the next three images contain a close-up of the image.

Midnight arcade
A Street Fighter II match flickers across a CRT screen, the game is in standby mode, looping scenes to attract players, framed by the glowing shell of a Sega Astro City arcade. Neon magenta reflections wash over the arcade as pixels battle beneath the hum of fluorescent lights in Osaka. A row of retro arcade cabinets stretches into the distance, their screens casting pink and blue light across empty stools and worn control panels. An Osaka game center frozen between rounds. An intimate Osaka arcade glows with saturated violet light. Gashapon machines and claw cranes crowd a narrow room that feels suspended somewhere between the 1990s and the present.A lineup of Sega Blast City cabinets illuminates the darkness with electric blue light. Retro fighters, puzzle games, and anime artwork flicker across aging screens, turning a quiet Osaka arcade into a shrine to gaming history.

A lone silhouette stands before the glowing machinery, dwarfed by a city built to consume the night.Turquoise steam pours from towering refinery stacks like Mako energy escaping a reactor core (in the video game Final Fantasy 7). Catwalks and pipes disappear into the haze, transforming the factory into a cyberpunk cathedral of light and steel.Seen through a cage of black girders, luminous towers burn in the darkness. Tokyo after dark
A thin alley cuts between weathered walls, drenched in crimson and cobalt light. Pipes and cables snake through the darkness while a distant doorway glows faintly. The alley and colours are reminiscent of the anime AKIRA. Red-and-white lanterns drift through a narrow Tokyo backstreet, their warm glow suspended against a sea of electric blue with a contrast in architecture between the old and the new.

Kamurochō after dark: polygons & photography
Virtual photography by Liam: Neon-soaked streets of Kamurocho glow beneath a canopy of signs, their reflections pooling across wet asphalt as a lone figure walks through the midnight blue haze. Captured in SEGA’s video game franchise: Yakuza. A solitary pair of legs stands at the edge of a rain-filled puddle, where electric magenta and gold signage melts into a painterly reflection on the street.A quiet 3D environment, a backstreet lined with glowing shopfronts and late-night eateries, where pink neon reflections guide a lone pedestrian through the heart of Kamurocho.

London after dark
Photography by Liam. Beneath Piccadilly’s glow, a lone motorcycle rider slips through ribbons of blue light as the city dissolves into pure velocity. Liam’s camera follows the motion of the rider with a slow shutter speed, causing the background to drag beams of motion blurred light and colour whilst keeping the rider in focus. Neon coloured billboards spill magenta and cyan across rain-dark pavement, turning an empty London into a dream of color. One sign has the video game Modern Warfare, where this exact setting was used as the environment of the game at the time. An umbrella silhouette drifts past red reflections beneath the city’s electric glow.

Tokyo in transit
Photography by Liam

Frame 1
A taxi driver settles into the cab as faint green reflections trace the windshield. The red “vacant” (空車) sign glows in the darkness, signaling another night shift ahead.

Frame 2
A solitary commuter stands before a passing crimson coloured freight train. Deep shadows stretch across the scene, reducing steel, light, and figure to bold graphic shapes.

Frame 3
Passengers are framed within the narrow windows of a crowded train, grey metal overwhelms the scene. Fleeting expressions emerge from the darkness before disappearing again into the rhythm of the evening commute.

Frame 4
Seen through a mirror embedded in a wall of yellow station tiles (Sangenjaya, Tokyo), a salaryman ascends a narrow stairwell. The reflection transforms an everyday moment into a quiet, cinematic scene hidden in plain sight. The structured grid tiles emphasise the everyday.

Blurred silhouettes drift across a rain-soaked Tokyo street, their forms melting into electric blue and crimson reflections. The image is upside down, focusing on their silhouettes in the puddle. A solitary silhouette lingers beneath a rain-speckled transparent umbrella, wrapped in a glow of deep scarlet light. Reflection of a silhouette close-up of someone’s shoes mid-walk, their form stretches across a rain-darkened pavement, their reflections dissolving into ripples of cobalt and midnight blue. A lone silhouette of a salaryman holding a briefcase is mirrored in a shimmering puddle, surrounded by luminous blue light and a flash of red. The wet street becomes a canvas of liquid colour.

Crimson traffic light suspended in a sea of electric violet, tangled power lines carving restless paths across the twilight.Deep indigo dusk washes over a quiet street corner, where a lone red signal traffic light burns like an ember beneath a web of midnight cables.Soft lavender skies cradle a distant moon, framed by dark utility lines that stretch across the city like ink on silk.Warm golden train windows glide through layers of cobalt and violet haze, a fleeting ribbon of light against the cooling cityscape. Subways after dark: London, Tokyo, Warsaw & Rome.
London : Station entrance of Piccadilly Circus, glowing in deep indigo shadows, stairs leading downwards drawing the eye into a quiet urban underworld. Tokyo: A lone figure descends into violet-blue subway light in Shinjuku, framed by geometric tiles and cinematic contrast. The colored light is achieved by a plastic gel over the flash on the camera. Warsaw: Electric-blue escalator tunnel stretching into infinity, illuminated like a futuristic corridor of stars. A man descends the escalators on the far right of the frame. The image is captured on a wide angle lens to exaggerate the lighting. It is framed with perfect symmetry: the silhouette of the man breaks it up. Rome: Emerald-tinted metro staircase beneath fluorescent light, the image is angled looking upwards at the stairs, evoking a moody late-night cityscape. The sign overhead reads “uscita”.
