Reform UK's St Helens council leader has been forced to backtrack after saying the "jury was out" on whether his council would commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. He has since confirmed the council will mark it. This came after he announced the council wouldn't be celebrating Black History Month

Hi Paul, don’t think I could be classed as a friend but have worked with him previously. That being said, I thought his initial responses over the City stuff were very odd and really poor actually. It’s created a needless headache for himself after a great few days at the conference.

And yes the wealthy should contribute more and they would under such a system, but it has to be similar to the NHS for it to work sustainably

I do find this country mad. Anyone can see that social care is in a state of devastating crisis in this country and that it is the key source of the NHS crisis as well. There is no feasible way to solve it without everyone contributing. Burnham is honest about that and is already getting pelters.

Absolutely fascinating to see Laura Kuenssberg interviewing Burnham, flailing to adjust her stance to a politician with a moral argument and a positive message, who stands up for his policies and answers her questions clearly. She is getting so agitated at him not playing the game by the 'rules'.

Can anyone explain to me why this article doesn't mention anywhere that small boat crossings are down 42% from last year? That doesn't mean it's not an issue 781 people arrived in one day. But it seems like the sort of context a reputable news source might mention www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The NHS is the greatest thing this country has dreamt up and delivered, I don’t think the politicians of today would have the courage or the fortitude to create it. We must protect it at all costs from the vultures who would love nothing more than to break it up and sell it off. Anyway that’s me.

Anyway glad to say after a nervous wait, my eye is ok. I mean it will never be great after what happened previously but for now I still have some sight in it. How lucky was I to be able to go to my local hospital and get that expert analysis from brilliant experts free of charge?

It honestly makes me furious and so sad to imagine how some of these guys must feel when they see politicians, media outlets and big chunks of the public spreading such vile messaging about the contribution of immigrants to our national life. I saw that contribution today, millions see it every day

Liam Thorp @liamthorp.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
As always it just makes a total mockery of the rhetoric we increasingly see being allowed to spread around our country about the contribution of immigrants. Our NHS and social care sectors would simply fall apart without those who come here to provide these essential and expert services…

Another thing you can’t help but notice when interacting with the NHS is just how many of these brilliant professionals are of different nationalities. Today I was seen by a Doctor and a nurse from different nations and they were just brilliant….

Liam Thorp @liamthorp.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
…it’s the opposite. I was just in awe of the staff as they raced around dealing with a huge volume of patients with efficiency, professionalism & kindness. We were regularly updated with how long waits were & reasons behind this - nurses, doctors and others working in harmony to keep things running

Went to hospital today. Some who followed me on the other place might remember I had a traumatic eye injury (retinal detachment) a few years ago. I had some worrying symptoms today but thankfully all ok. It was a busy day in A&E and I ended up waiting 5 hours, but this is far from a complaint…
