🌍Are you wanting a reminder of the beauty of our planet and your place in the world? Well, this is what Deb’s novel gave me. I absolutely love this sense of wonder, amazement and awe that Deb Olin Unferth inspired Her novel Earth 7 is published by @dauntbookspub.bsky.social

Here’s three things I learnt from Louisa Bello! 1️⃣ Will the truth set us free? It’s hard to know! But Louisa was committed to depicting someone contending with the darkness and depths of their psyche.

🍾Bit of a tongue twister this one! That moment when you’ve got a publisher must feel amazing…and Louisa Bello was certainly deserving of it after the long road to getting there. I’m not sure she expected it to end in a pub with @epoquepress.bsky.social

The barriers that writers from under-represented backgrounds face is discussed here by Deepa Anappara. I sat and listened as Deepa explained by some of the challenges she and other writers have faced in forging a writing career. Certainly thought provoking stuff…

At the core of Deepa Anappara’s book is a really personal experience that shaped it Which might be slightly surprising considering it’s set in the mountains of Tibet 150 years ago Also I’m so grateful when writers open up to me and so glad they feel comfortable to do so.

A couple of the Booker Prize books I’ve read (I’ve started M John Harrison and picked it as a summer read in my latest Ask the Host!) I’ve read Makenna’s book a couple of times now. I really like it. It’s ethereal, spectral, dry…there’s a riff on the ego as a container in there which I love

⛰️These are the kinds of the summer reads that I love… A book has a bit of everything, but, most importantly, a ton of really good writing that makes you think deep and long about writing, travel and life… Deepa Anappara joined me to discuss THE LAST OF EARTH @oneworldbooks.bsky.social

Thanks @liamhbishopwriting.bsky.social & many readers for a great response to my new @aeon.co essay uncovering the secret world of modern French fire-tamers, their practice, belief, hospital work & tiny gestures of care. If, as Sontag writes, illness is metaphor, what is the symbolism of the fire?
