No, AI is a field of study in computer science going back to the 1960s at least. Neural nets, machine learning, pattern recognition, language models are subjects in the discipline. "An artificial intelligence" or "intelligent system" is too. AI being used as marketing jargon is... annoying.

One can argue that any generative audio system is "AI" people like to slap the "AI" label on whatever they feel like. With Livecoding I've had people immediately assume I'm using AI when I'm not using any machine learning whatsoever.

Many of the good things you associate with AI existed years, sometimes decades prior to Open AI - LLMs not that dissimilar to the potential of the Metaverse existed in VRChat and 2nd Life. LMs, Machine Learning, etc, will outlive Gen AI which is what people have an issue with.

Idk. I like a crisp line between human and hybrid text in my own work. But I'm not experiencing much distress yet from the AI-authored "personal inquiries" &c I get. I get a lot—several a week for sure—but it's just a small piece of the spam flood that began when we could send letters w/o stamps.

I think there are niche use cases where it's beneficial. Developers for example can cut years and years of training by using AI and what they know in other languages to learn/grow/develop in areas they aren't experts in. That use case is not big enough to justify the rest of it

I do not want to read an email that the sender didn't write, or a blog post that they commissioned from model X--even if in my own work I find value in that same model. My rejection is not a judgement on the prose, but a judgment about the rules of human interaction. Cogent spam ... is still spam.

We keep bolting more 'thinking steps' onto models and assuming it helps. on hard language puzzles, making the model show its work made it worse, and forcing clean JSON output hurt most of all. when does scaffolding stop helping? #MachineLearning #AI #LLMs
