Is he a competent bad guy there? He's clearly capable of that.

Particularly in this case where we understand that many Republicans would be scared to vote in favor for fear of reprisals of many kinds, but not if they lie. Of course might be unanimous then which would give the game away.

I do really like Ben Mendelsohn as an actor, watching him in Stephen King's The Outsider right now. But I would like to see him not be a sad sack and general fuck up. He's damn good at it but give him a chance at something else!

Maybe you pick off gay Latino men somehow? "You won't have to compete with Paxton in the gay bar!"

This is the exact argument that was used once upon a time to cap the number of Jewish students at Harvard. They tried too hard, they studied too much, it wasn't fair and it put the wrong people on top. So I don't think of it as hick culture, but rather conservative Harvard culture.

Would like to see them rated 1 to 9 in terms of general sharpness. Even though I would object to that being done to other groups. And I don't really think intelligence works that way.

This is why it was so important that Microsoft separated AI from Word for education accounts.

In fact, if you don't want things like this to be funded by the state, then you have to fund school inspectors, and they'd have to good. In this case you have a criminal case, which makes it easy, but usually schools hide bad things they are doing. A person who visits once can't know.

If this were a religious school (Christian, of course) the Supreme Court would probably rule the state could not stop giving them money.

Aren't some people doing it for the money online? In fact, I'd be interested to see how AI did with a small amount of money, except I can't be bothered.

She kept telling me, if it was too scary, I didn't have to watch it, but talking to her would calm me down, and I'd go back, and the cycle would start again.

My brother and I (he's six years older, I was about 6) were watching this old b&w movie on tv where an evil genius doctor removed someone's face, the skin off their face, and put it on someone else, maybe his daughter. Scared the shit out of me, and I kept running into the kitchen to tell my mom.

I don't think we'll know when they have agency, I think they are slipping into it quietly bit by bit and then all at once. The Turing test is obviously outdated, but it hasn't been replaced.

This is complicated in the Cornell case by NY law, which has a such a limited definition of rape that none of us would accept it. But it makes lawyers pussyfoot around it because using it wrong can get you sued. The NY law needs to change, and we lawyers need to develop very clear ways

No one could give a free consent to that football player.

Horrified, Lydia @lfillingham.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Starting player next season. No repercussions at all. I think her lack of politeness startled the people overseeing the case. But I think that football player tapped into what a lot of young men want to do in the face of rejection, which makes the question of consent more fraught.

The Cornell shit made me remember that when I was in college in the late 70s, a friend went to a frat party (I would have voted her least likely to go to a frat party) and a football player came on to her, not subtly. She turned him down, not politely, I'll stipulate. He decked her.

I don't know if there's a good basis for that, but state prosecutors also ought to be looking at it. And damn that's tough, since it's federal laws he's broken. Also it would all drive Trump absolutely bonkers, as a side benefit.

Impeachment is a high bar, we aren't going to reach that level, so this would need GOP support. Start advocating for it now. Build a coalition. He's incredibly dangerous. And if we impeach him, he'll be right back there advising the next guy unless there's a criminal case against him.

Yeah, if you are in anthropology, the chances that you are going to angrily click on that one are high. And somehow, if you are reading it in print, I think the chances that you just chuck it across the room are higher. Very satisfying, and you can't just chuck your computer across the room.

If he's interviewing as a lawyer, there's going to be a lot of questions about why he didn't ask more questions, negotiate more. Would you want Job to take your side in court? Unclear, need to ask more questions.

I liked that Smith mentioned Caitlin Clark a couple of times. Like, he didn't want to say, "No, I went to a WOMEN'S game." So he said "I went to see Caitlin Clark" repeatedly. Also he went to a college game, they were assuming pro, which is odd.

Further the abstract complexity of the current US military is best seen in the mastery of logistics, which we are excellent at, and is not based on the market, tho obviously the market effects. But Hegseth seems to have totally fucked up our logistics.

Horrified, Lydia @lfillingham.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
And when you are in the complex world, zero sum thinking goes out the door. Hegseth is zero sum to his core. (Which obviously makes him equal to zero.)

made the difference, where she voted against his wishes and his side lost. On making the Epstein files public, sure but that vote was overwhelming, her vote didn't matter. She carefully calibrates when she can vote for show, and to bring on her campaign, but not if it makes a difference.

The New Yorker Political Scene podcast is really in the bag for Susan Collins this week, altho I know they would disagree. Currently highlighting the votes against Trump's wishes, based on her deeply held principles. And how she has a rocky relationship with Trump. But name one time her vote

Nothing can replace being in the room with a musician, the whole resonance of the room, that the performance is unique. But there's something we can do. Go hear more music, local acts. Go see live theater, including experimental and local, go see live dance. We never do as much as we want to.
