It's extremely easy to demand someone end a war, and everyone should be doing it. But one thing about wars is, it's a lot easier to get in them than to get out of them. I don't see how Trump could end the war before the midterms unless he expressly or tacitly surrenders.

As their midterm picture darkens, and gas and diesel prices soar, some Republicans who backed the war for months are now changing their tune.

Jesus Manuel Arenas-Silva Dies in ICE Custody While Nation Continues to Grapple with ICE
Killings in Maine and Texas
Ocilla, Georgia -As the nation grapples with the horror of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) murders of Joan Sebastián Guerrero, 26, in Maine and Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, 52, in Texas, the agency’s death toll within its custody continues to grow at a record-breaking pace. Jesus Manuel Arenas-Silva, 45, tragically died in ICE custody on July 13 while being transferred from the Irwin Detention Center to the Folkston Detention Center in Georgia.
His sister said, “Jesus Manuel Arenas Silva was a loving son and brother, a caring and hard-working man who came to this country to seek better opportunities. His tragic death has left our family with an immense void and deep sorrow.”
Jesus Manuel was detained by ICE last Thursday. His apprehension by ICE at his house was traumatic for him and his family. Jesus required medications for a medical condition he was dealing with. His sister said, “We implored ICE not to take him due to his medical needs, but they didn’t listen to our pleas. They also ignored our request to at least allow him to take the medication with him, allowing only one medication.” Jesus Manual later confirmed during a phone call to his sister that ICE did not give him the medication he needed. He went without medication during his detention until he tragically died in ICE custody on Monday.
The family is demanding justice and an independent investigation into his death: “ am 100% certain that he did not receive proper care.
I deeply mourn his passing in such a cruel manner; that is why I will seek justice for him and for everyone else who goes through this, so that other families do not have to endure what we are going through. No one deserves this,” added his sister. [cont][cont] Fiscal year 2026 was the deadliest fiscal year in ICE’s history. There have now been 53 deaths in ICE custody since Trump was inaugurated, 33 deaths in fiscal year 2026 alone. Immigrant justice advocates have been ringing the alarm demanding members of Congress act now to zero out ICE funding in upcoming appropriations bills, revoke the billions of dollars they have already given the agency, get ICE out of communities nationwide, and shut down ICE detention centers, including Irwin, for good.
The Irwin Detention Center is one of ICE’s most notorious facilities. In 2021 ICE terminated its contract at Irwin after a shocking Department of Homeland Security_(DHS) Office of the Inspector General (OIG) complaint filed by Georgia-based groups revealed horrific accounts from detained immigrants and whistleblower nurse, Dawn Wooten, describing multiple levels of abuse, including ICE neglecting to follow COVID-19 safety protocols and a pattern of unnecessary and invasive gynecological procedures performed on women held at the facility without informed consent. The accounts of medical abuse garnered national headlines and prompted a Congressional inquiry into the facility. This complaint was far from the first - the facility had a documented record of abuse since opening its doors in 2010. After years of advocacy and the collective courage of the whistleblowing nurse and immigrant women who spoke out, ICE’s contract with Irwin was terminated in 2021. However, ICE resumed detaining migrants at Irwin with the return of the Trump administration in October 2025 as a part of his mass immigrant detention expansion plan.

The divergent outcomes in these two cases seem driven by nothing more than a desire to avoid roiling global financial markets by decreasing faith in U.S. monetary policy.2 But this divergence in outcome does mask one deep consistency between the two. In both cases, the principle variably called "accountability" in Slaughter and "political interference" in Cook-and the shift in locution is, of course, wildly telling is figured as running through the president alone. In Slaughter, like in the unitarian decisions before it, lack of presidential control equates to lack of democratic accountability, and this is bad. In Cook, lack of presidential control equates to lack of political interference, and this is good. In neither case is there any conception of democratic accountability or control that may run through any institution other than the presidency.

To all the readers out there:
My deep love for Charity Bryant and Sylvia Drake, the subjects of my 2014 biography Charity and Sylvia, has kept me silent, up to this point, about Tillie Walden's new graphic novel by the same title. Charity and Sylvia's story has been so deeply meaningful to so many people-their story has, without exaggeration, saved lives-that I've tried to be happy that Walden's book is making their story more widely known, even it she chose to take my title and my cover design as well as my narrative and my research with only a single sentence of acknowledgement at the end of her book in her notes section. Walden's illustrations and storytelling are wonderful, as I told her when she reached out to me during the writing process. It would take nothing away from her hard work to be honest about how it is built on my hard work. But in Walden's publicity tour, she has repeatedly made the claim to have based her book on her extensive research in the archive without acknowledging that her book is, in fact, based on my book. This false representation demands response not only for my sake, but for the sake of all the hard-working historians out there whose work has similarly been taken without credit. No, Walden has not "uncovered a chapter of queer history" in the archives, as her media interviews have claimed. She has adapted my book without credit or compensation, and claimed my research for her own. I don't doubt that Walden spent time looking at letters at the Henry Sheldon Museum, but the story that Walden tells is not to be found there. It is a story that I pieced together from years of visits to at least twenty different archives and locations across the United States, not only in Vermont but in Massachusetts, New York, Illinois, and Washington State, as well. This is not just a question of facts but of story: the story of how Charity and Sylvia built a life together based in tailoring, struggled with their faith, and maintained relationships with t…

I think this is also about "belief" and blind spots. I'm giving the quote again with highlights. This is in the para about cis women, and we need to cater to what services they "believe" are their due, bc male violence.
"I don't want trans people to be constantly pilloried on social media for being who they are and wanting to live the lives that they want to lead.
"But also I want women to be able to access the services and service providers to be able [begin highlighting] to deliver the services that they believe are necessary on a single sex basis for women who have experienced male violence.[end highlighting] I don't think those two things ought to be in conflict."

This is a very confusing story, I'd have to say badly written story. In the first para below, it says the CIA could not locate the gold bars [that were supposed to be?] In his home. The very next para details the FBI searching his home on a specific date and finding the gold.

When the C.I.A. conducted a review of where the gold and currency were stashed, the agency was "unable to locate the gold bars or significant amounts of the foreign currency" according to court papers.
On May 18, F.B.I. agents searched Mr.
Rush's home and found "approximately 303 gold bars, each of which weighed approximately one kilogram," according to an affidavit. Based on the price of gold, the affidavit said, the estimated value of the gold exceeded $40 million. Investigators also seized nearly three dozen luxury watches, many of them Rolexes.
The court papers do not indicate why Mr.
Rush appears to have kept so much gold, and $2 million in U.S. currency, in his home, or what work project would have required him to amass such wealth.

PRECEDENTS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
In another respect the value of precedent to the House of Representatives should not be overlooked. The framers of the Constitution experienced little uncertainty as to the functions and powers of the House. In the Colonial Assemblies there was existing a political institution, indigenous to America, and proven by the long conflict arising from the attempts of the English Kings to establish arbitrary power. The people of America had fought the first battle of liberty in the Colonial Assemblies. Nowhere else, among the great nations of the earth, did the people possess such a perfect means of expressing their will. It was natural, therefore, that the framers of the Constitution should at once have conceived of a National House of Representatives, framed on the model of the Colonial Houses, and should have guaranteed to it the powers and privileges necessary for its preservation as the organ of the will of the whole people. It is a duty and a national necessity that those powers and privileges be preserved in their pristine vigor; and there is no surer way to this end than perfect information on the part of every Member of the House as to what they are. One of the chief ends proposed by this work has been the collection and classification of the precedents relating to this subject in such a way that they may always be clearly before the membership of the House. [highlighted] If the prerogatives of the House are [well] understood, other branches of the Government are less likely to encroach on them; and if there be encroachment, it is more likely to be met with promptness, intelligence, and firmness.

What I find so bizarre about Vance's attack on the Pope is it wasn't even standard "Stay in your lane!" criticism. It was "I'm going to strut into your lane and declare myself policeman!" Which is so out of the norm that once again it's hard for the media to cover it.

Cultural facilities, such as cinemas and theaters, are the beating hearts of our communities because they contribute to making them more human. If a city is alive, it is thanks in part to its cultural spaces. We must inhabit these spaces and build relationships within them, day after day. Nonetheless, cinemas are experiencing a troubling decline, with many being removed from cities and neighborhoods. More than a few people are saying that the art of cinema and the cinematic experience are in danger. I urge institutions not to give up but to cooperate in affirming the social and cultural value of this activity.
The logic of algorithms tends to repeat what "works," but art opens up what is possible. Not everything has to be immediate or predictable. Defend slowness when it serves a purpose, silence when it speaks and difference when evocative.
Beauty is not just a means of escape; it is, above all, an invocation. When cinema is authentic, it does not merely console but challenges. It articulates the questions that dwell within us and sometimes even provokes tears that we did not know we needed to express.

Dear Faculty Senators,
Yesterday, I received a forwarded copy of Rachel Sheridan's accounting of my resignation. I have also seen a letter from Governor Youngkin to Governor-Elect Spanberger, which also touches on the subject of my resignation.
I am sharing my own account, which you will see differs in significant parts from the account of Rector Sheridan and Governor Youngkin. The document I am sharing is not a direct response to or a point-by-point rebuttal of the letters from Rector Sheridan and Governor Youngkin. There will be time for that later, if need be. This is instead a document that I put together over the summer, so I would have a record of the events while they were fresh in my mind. I was never sure if I would release it publicly, but I thought there might be a legislative hearing or inquiry that would require me to respond, and I wanted to make sure my memories were freshly recorded.
In light of Rector Sheridan's letter, as well as the Governor's, which I do not think present an accurate accounting of my resignation, I am sending my document to all of you now. I am sorry for the slight delay. I did not send this to you yesterday because I thought it would be inappropriate to do so on the third anniversary of the tragic deaths of three of our students

Absolute kudos to Robert Primus and Alyssa Shukar of the NYT for this photo of the Chairman of the Surface Transportation Board that Trump I hired and Trump II fired. Dressed to the nines and looking smart he manages to make the metal mass transit bench he's sitting on look like a luxurious couch!
Black man with medium fro, sharp black glasses with purple-tinted lenses. Neat mustache and beard, greying because we're all human. Dark-blue pinstriped suit, white shirt with carefully shot cuffs, muted purple polka dot tie, pocket kerchief that's a swirl of color. He's sitting on a metal bench with a woven metal seat that curves over the back, and Mr Primus's elbow rests on that. Indeed he is sitting at an above ground transit station, I think both as an example of Surface Transportation, and because the man is unemployed!
