Ah but we need AI data centres to solve the climate problem - they say. The ultimate paradox. We must f*ck the planet even more in order to stop f*cking the planet. Madness.

💡Could a rapid shift to clean energy trigger a "cascade of progress" towards repairing the damage to our seas caused by the climate crisis? Scientists at Exeter Uni & the Earthshot prize certainly think so 🔽 bit.ly/4yE7218

AI clearly is on another level regarding resource use. But we need data centres. Where is blue sky running? Technophobia is not the answer. We need to find sustainable ways to achieve the goal. AI, like flying, is not going away.

It is imperative to stop super rich donors, but union influence in politics also skews democracy. There may be many members but it's a handful of individuals who wield the lobbying power. Not all are good actors.

🚨 Destructive bottom trawling is allowed in most of the UK's marine protected areas - places that are meant to be sanctuaries for wildlife. That's why I'm standing with @oceanauk.bsky.social in calling on government to ban bottom trawling in UK MPAs 🌊 Join me! act.oceana.org/page/195311/...

Even if it had true independence, it is still a corporate behemoth that belongs in the past. I would rather my licence fee was divided up between small independent outfits like @thenerve.news , @bellingcat.com and @bylinetimes.bsky.social (the same could go for drama etc..)

And leave nothing in the local economy. Locals will take all the pain without any of the gain. At least the goldrush brought hoards of small time prospectors who spent their money locally. Data centres are often lights out operations.

Should we name and shame the printers of Reform's promo material, and indeed all their other suppliers? Or would that be classed as an incitement to harm, unlike the completely benign stoking up of hatred and anger against anybody who looks a bit "foreign"?

50 odd years ago I too was taught about the carbon cycle and greenhouse effect, and also the ozone hole and acid rain. The last two got fixed. Like giving up smoking it's never too late for cutting emissions. Keep writing to those MPs.

Every so often, the way we produce our food needs a revolution, not merely adaption. Precision fermentation offers that revolutionary path. Politics and vested interests prevent us from taking it.

I agree with Kunikos. Both councils and contractors will pay minimum wage for minimum wage jobs. Well negotiated contracts would define service quality and levels at a given price. The profit motive and accountability does lead to efficiency. The state can't do everything, but it must get smarter.

He's just talking about electricity, which delivers about 20% of point of use energy in the UK. Transport and central heating dwarf electricity use and are still mainly fossil fuel based. More EVs, more heat pumps and a hugely better distribution grid are needed.

Lex Schlup @lexschlup.bsky.social · 01/05/2026
Of course this is good news. We still have the problem of gas (central heating) and petrol/diesel (transport). These dwarf electricity consumption. Need loads more EVs and heat pumps - and a massively improved grid - in order to mitigate fossil fuel shocks.

Slowly the untouchable subject of the frankly horrific ecological impact of pets is being raised. UK cats, as Attenborough has pointed out, kill 55 million birds a year and as many small mammals. Pet medication including antibiotics is a huge problem. Pet feed has a huge environmental impact.

Banning this, however abhorrent it may be, would do nothing for the planet or for life in the oceans - it would simply make you feel better. The industrial scale destruction caused by purse seine netting and bottom trawling is what must be stopped. And we must enforce marine protection zones.

Starmer instinctively does what he thinks is good for Starmer. Mistakenly, this has meant chasing Reform to the right. However in this case I think he sees that *not* joining the US/Israeli offensive is in his own best political interest. Principle doesn't enter into it.

Completely agree this is great news - but we need a lot more. Conflating this with abolishing juries (there is no question of that) diminishes your message. Finding a way to stop minor criminals intentionally clogging courts to avoid facing justice may be a good thing for justice overall.
