Here in the safest NDP riding, I wonder if some might inconspicuously remove their Neighbourhoods United signs after seeing the organization’s founder lined up next to Danielle Smith.

As a resident of a neighborhood where this debate rages (Lendrum), you are absolutely right, and the wedge is very visible. I walk down the street and see Forever Canadian signs and rainbow flags in the same yards as Neighborhoods United and restrictive covenant signs.

I was in east Africa when it happened and didn’t return until December. I watched the descent into insanity from afar and came back to a country I didn’t recognize.

I think there are things to learn from those people working for peace and justice. Nonetheless, I don’t think that I’d do the same trip now. I certainly don’t know what positive things we can learn about policing from an apartheid state. This article confirmed my worst expectations.

For what it’s worth, I went to Israel and the West Bank for a seminar on religion, law, and conflict resolution in 2009. I still feel conflicted by that decision even thought it featured both Israeli and Palestinian peace activists.

For the last few months, every time I read about this trip I wondered where the itinerary was. The longer the story developed without EPS releasing the itinerary, the worse I assumed it would be. I’m thankful @readtheorchard.org was able to get his hands on it.

Reading the latest update from the Chief Electoral Officer alongside Gerson’s account certainly paints a picture regarding the reasons for this delay. www.elections.ab.ca/resources/me...
On May 9, 2025, the Chief Electoral Officer wrote to all members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta outlining several concerns with Bill 54: Justice Statutes Amendment Act before it was passed. The Chief Electoral Officer’s letter included a specific section on “Changing the Threshold for Investigation to the Criminal Law Standard of “Reasonable Grounds””.

The letter warned that:

“[u]nder Bill 54, for an investigation to begin, the Election Commissioner will need to be satisfied that a breach of the Legislation has occurred, before they can speak to anyone about the allegation, or gather and review any records. Practically this means that the onus will fall on a complainant to provide a substantively completed investigation in order for the Election Commissioner to look into a matter.”

The letter went on to describe the potential impact on Albertans:

“The proposed changes will eliminate the majority of the compliance activities undertaken by the Election Commissioner and impact Albertans’ trust that the rules… are being followed.”

Elections Alberta can confirm that requiring “reasonable grounds” in Legislation has indeed impacted Albertans in this and other matters, as predicted in that letter.

Fascinating firsthand account of the Centurion meeting. Appel’s note about Elections Alberta using fictitious information is fascinating. I was wondering how one could prove who leaked the data set, and that’s probably the way. It reminds me of the “Canary Trap,” coined by Tom Clancy.

This is such a great analogy. Even though it is in reference to academia, it applies in other professional contexts as well. An expectation I have of myself and my teams is that we exhibit a deep understanding of the topics we are dealing with, and using AI shortcuts often deprives us of that.

Perhaps a useful exercise is to ask, hypothetically: If the Premier wanted to enable separation while maintaining plausible deniability about her support for it, would she do anything differently?

I think it’s a nuanced issue. A lot of what we characterize as “social disorder” stems from Edmonton’s role as host to major hospitals and remand centres that serve the broader region. The lack of support for vulnerable people who come (or are brought) to Edmonton is a regional issue IMO.

They don’t really consider the fact that some Albertans might disagree, or that they might have to persuade or build a coalition to enact their agenda. They seem to assume Alberta is this homogenous population that shares all of their grievances and proposed solutions.

The thing that strikes me about separatists (in addition to the pervasive victim mentality) is that they all are confident of how an independent Alberta will govern itself. Its approach to immigration, education, public health, and environmental regs will be exactly how *they* think it should be.

Time is always a factor in negotiations, which is why I didn’t really like Carney’s self imposed deadlines. Stretching things out is to our benefit. The “emergency” tariffs are on shaky legal ground, Trump’s popularity is in the toilet. Trump’s position is likely not going to get stronger with time.
