Gentlemen’s Agreement: A Book length Shadow Epic/Nero Wolfe Mystery
“Goodwin,” he said.
“Shrevvy,” I said eventually.
Written down like this it might look as if we were sizing each other up. We weren’t. Out of all the man in the hat’s boys, Moe Shrevvy was one I would’ve at least dealt in at Saul’s weekly game. Whether he rated the table d'hôte special back at the brownstone would’ve been Wolfe’s call, but he’d never had anything bad to say the few times the hack came up.
We’d exchanged glances and amenable nods in hash houses and precinct lobbies all across the island, even shared a few glasses of something with the other leg men at dear old Long Tom’s wake all those years ago. So I liked Shrevvy. Shrevvy in and of himself wasn’t the problem.
The problem was the agreement. Or rather the possibility of the agreement not being there anymore.
There aren’t many rules in this business. Poaching clients isn’t the concern it is in respectable trades because, even accounting for Wolfe’s constant invitations to all involved and the Homicide West boys, your aims are usually those of the client—to solve the problem as discreetly as possible. The horse led back to their stable, the genie returned to the bottle, the boogiemen persuaded to remain under the bed.
Well. All but one.
There might’ve been someone out there with the brass to tell the Shadow where to go. If I had to put money on anyone it’d probably be Wolfe, though good luck finding any takers. I wouldn’t want to be in the room if it ever came to that. I wouldn’t want to still be in the state.
That was what the agreement was for. Saul had brought it to us way back, still fresh from shaky informants doing the rounds, making sure it reached every professional in the city—You stay out of the Shadow’s business, and he’ll stay out of yours. What prompted it, specifically which if any shamus prompted it, is the stuff of basement dive myth. You think they got bloody on Olympus? Imagine all the bulls in this game, crammed into the China shop of Manhattan, their egos and trigger fingers packed into offices and apartments. All pressed into the space, pressing down through the floorboards and girders, so much pressure it’s a wonder the bedrock hasn’t cracked yet. All of it vibrating from your heart hammering from the thought of seeking out more danger, the potential of death for enough bread to keep your life going another month.
Now imagine adding to this potent mixture a spoonful of gunpowder like a totally separate industry of operatives, something almost like a cult. Guys who can use their fists or trigger fingers as well as you can. Or can maybe do more, like that bunch Tom ran with. Just like you, some better than you, all working for him.
No one could touch him, at least not without featuring on the front page of the Gazette the next day, under a meat wagon tarp. The NYPD couldn’t catch him. The syndicates might finally kill him someday, but they’d fill a lot of meat wagons first.
So you, we I suppose, couldn’t touch the Shadow. But there were enough of his people nowadays that you could spot the tells, if you knew what to look for. Some of them drank in the same joints we did, brough the odd round, even. Our collective circle was that small. Small enough that if a PI were to get mad enough, maybe he’d figure he could touch one of the Shadow’s operatives. That he could reach out and…what?
Get them mad, for starters. And that’d end with their boss getting mad. Maybe mad enough to decide he shouldn’t settle for just one flatfoot’s head. That there shouldn’t be any operatives in New York, the boroughs, on the face of the Earth, except his.
That was one possibility, which was presumably why he’d decided on the arrangement. To prevent it from becoming an inevitability. It’d work so far. Maybe the war had helped, a sort of audible. You know my thoughts about my posting at the time, and that still managed to keep me busy enough. What Shrevvy and the Shadow and their crowd got up to around then, I don’t want to know.
So there we were. Waist deep in the 20th century, the arrangement over a decade old, and me and good old Moe ‘Shrevvy’ Shrevnitz looking at each other across a New York living room, wondering how things could have ever worked out so good for so long, and just why exactly we had to be the two stiffs who might be about to undo it all. “Here on business?” I said, trying to sound casual.
“’Fraid so,” Shrevvy said, one corner of his mouth twitching slightly. He sounded tired, as if from the effort of trying not to look apologetic. Or as if he was thinking about the same thing I was.
I stood up carefully. “Well.”
“Well.” He was leaning against the doorframe now, arms folded. I tried to keep from watching his hands, because keyed up as I was starting to make myself, contemplating Armageddon and all, I knew there was no need. Shrevvy wouldn’t make that sort of move any more than I would.
“You handling this solo, or…?” I trailed off. If it was just Shrevvy we could probably talk, find some angel of the arrangement that could work. If more of his crowd were on the way up that would be fine too. They’d have their own ways of operating, and I wouldn’t want to be in the way. I’m helpful like that.
Shrevvy frowned, not at me but in careful consideration, scratching one ear. “Nah,” he said. “Truth be told I dunno that were handlin’ anything yet, or how. But we’re here. And we got our orders.”
“I know that tune,” I said, raising my hat in a sort of salute. I started for the door but froze as he straightened up from the frame. His raised hand, palm open, mercifully said ‘hold on a sec.’ “You, ah, done a sweep yet?” he asked.
“Only here and the office. I’d probably have checked the bedroom after that.” I looked over my shoulder at the deceased, wondering where this might be going. And what it was about this guy that would get the Shadow interested enough to send Shrevvy plus whoever else was on the way up.
“Alright,” Shrevvy said, more to himself. His eyes tracked from me to the body, into the middle distance, over to whatever else was behind me, then back to me. “Dumb question, but is this a job for Mr. Wolfe?”
“If you mean did the poor fellow behind me hire us, no, but he was next on a list our client wanted us to look into.”
Shrevvy nodded. He seemed to know better than to ask anything that might breach client confidentiality. If so, it was appreciated. I honestly didn’t know what I’d have said if he had. Not without ringing the bell for the first, and potentially last, round between Wolfe and the honest-to-God Shadow. The problem now was I had no clue where this might be going next. I didn’t want to walk out of here, possibly encountering the rest of Shrevvy’s merry band in the elevator or stairwell, anymore than I wanted to go back home and explain to Wolfe how I technically hadn’t run off with my tail between my legs.
It wouldn’t be the loss of potential revenue that would stick. Odds were high as ever of Wolfe having a lapse. Any excuse not to be at the grindstone would do. But there’d be his pride to consider, a casualty of the weird mechanics of the arrangement. If the Shadow’s operatives showed up on a case, you were expected to stand aside and be grateful they didn’t tell you to hold the door for them on your way out. No one wanted to be the gumshoe who got under the Shadow’s feet, but none of us wanted to be the one who got the brushoff either.
That didn’t feel like the direction Shrevvy was thinking of taking this, though. And if he was thinking what I thought he might be thinking… What can I say, I’d sooner drink straight from the East River than sail into these sorts of uncharted waters.
“How about this,” he said eventually.

Guess what? Gas boilers were once a "middle class technology". So were televisions, and phones. That's the standard trajectory for any roll-out. Build the market, drive down the costs and an exclusive tech is universalised. Or did you have another route in mind?

To those who say "heat pumps are for the middle classes": the whole damn point of subsidising them and rolling out the technology is to ensure that heat pumps are for everyone, reducing our bills, reducing indoor and outdoor pollution, reducing our emissions, while making our homes more habitable.

Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence
