Looks like, even though our office in San Diego is closing, I'll be in OC for another really long weekend, and back in SD for 3 days for our "onsite" which will now occur at a hotel. I'll miss my long weekends there, but nothing like this ever lasts.

Gonna have fun setting this up today after work. With the weirdness going on with computers, and a favor, I was able to sell my M4 Max Mac Studio a month ago for less than it cost me to upgrade to an identically configured M5 Max.

One of my colleagues made the comment that he'd never been someplace as smokey as the lobby of Encore in Vegas when we were walking through it. He's in his early 30s. This reminded me of when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s, that there were smoking/nonsmoking sections that both smelled […]

I've been running a Tripplite rack cooler in the home server room for a few years. While it keeps the room cool, it also doesn't manage humidity super well, and only has two modes - Fan, and compressor on. So it cycles quite a bit throughout the day, It also places quite a bit of load on the UPS […]

pixel.tiggi.es #pixelfed is now on Pixelfed 0.14.4. With sixteen workers, every queue is at zero, with maybe a few seconds of wait. Two weeks ago this thing had 3,383 jobs stuck in a table nothing was reading because an update changed a default and didn't mention it. It's nice to look at this […]

Hertz rental car company is hot garbage. Friday, I had a 10:30 pickup to rent a car for the day. My flight was (was…) set to board at 5:25. So I’d have several hours to kill. I didn’t get my car until 12:30. And this is after about 20 others with appointments came in and were declined cars […]

Laying here thinking, if I’m this unhappy in Vegas at room in Encore with airfare, hotel, and food paid for by work, how unhappy would I be if I was paying for all of this? About 18 years ago, there was a lot of cheap, fun stuff to do. Now it’s all gone and fees upon fees and super expensive […]

Uh, I would upgrade to Masto 4.7.2 if I was anyone out there hosting a Fedi instance. OpenAI hacked Anthropic using the bug in libheif. The same thing that 4.7.2 fixed/bypassed. So if this is a known exploit out in the wild, it's a really good idea to get on top of it.

On July 25, we hacked OpenAl.
It took us less than 72 hours and we proved it with a PR in OpenAl's internal
codebase.
Two bugs let us take over ChatGPT/Codex accounts of OpenAl employees and reach
connected services: Outlook, Slack, GitHub, etc.
This was the full exploit chain.
HEIC/HEIF upload
ImageMagick decoding
Heap overflow on libheif
RCE on community.openai.com
Critical OpenAl SSO flaw
ChatGPT/Codex takeover
Connected GitHub access
Internal repo PR
The image package libheif had a known vulnerability, fixed upstream, but the fix
never flagged as security-relevant and was still present in Discourse. Uploading a
HEIF file gave us RCE on the OpenAl community forum.
That was only the first bug.
The second bug is more serious: an OpenAl SSO vulnerability.
Using this flaw, we turned our Discourse forum exploit into access to ChatGPT and
Codex accounts belonging to people who had signed into it, including OpenAl
employees.
Those accounts could be (and some were) connected to Outlook, Gmail, Google
Drive, Slack, GitHub, and other services via Codex or ChatGPT. The potential impact
was much larger than ChatGPT alone.
Codex created a harmless PR in their internal monorepo without us reading sensitive
code. That proved to us that the access was real.
