New preprint: we explore the role of mechanosensation in Pristionchus pacificus, focusing on the gene mec-2. Interesting hints about how sensory pathways contribute to behaviour in this nematode. available here if you're curious: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

The IL2 neurons are my new favourite neurons in Pristionchus. In our new paper, lead by @marianneroca.bsky.social, we show which sensory modalities are crucial for a predating worm, which all are sensed in the IL2’s. And the IL2’s are sensitive to octopamine, promoting aggression in these worms 🧠🪱🔬🧪

Our latest paper is out in Nature 🥳 We investigated the underlying neuromodulatory regulation of aggressive behavior in the nematode Pristionchus pacificus 🪱🧠🔬 And we show that novel behaviors can evolve through changes of single neuron function by switches in neuromodulator-receptor expression. 👇

What a concept, sadopopulism. Explains some twisted things, kind of.
Screenshot of article, bold in center:
“They’re offering them delight in the torture of others.”

Rest of text: “The memes about brutal detention and deportation, specifically, invite audiences to delight in what Stanley calls “torture,” to see themselves in what the government is doing, to say, as he puts it, “This is something we’re doing together, we’re having a blast, we’re laughing and those wimpy liberals are saying it’s scandalous. We’re going to show our power over them by having as much fun as possible.”

“Stanley says that it’s part of the overall structure of what his colleague Timothy Snyder calls “sadopopulism“: putting policies into place that inflict real pain”

Are LLMs correlated when they make mistakes? In our new ICML paper, we answer this question using responses of >350 LLMs. We find substantial correlation. On one dataset, LLMs agree on the wrong answer ~2x more than they would at random. 🧵(1/7) arxiv.org/abs/2506.07962

Scientists who study climate don't automatically attribute all changes to human activity. Rather, we carefully investigate every possible natural factor that could explain the planet's warming. Could these be the real culprits? The evidence is in--and the answer is NO. This thread explains! 🧵
A graphic with an icon of the sun, a wiggly line denoting natural cycles, and a volcano, with a title reading "WHY is climate changing?" created by me. Not fancy, as my graphic design skills lean to function over art!
