I saw southern auroras last night!!!! Rakiura! Holy cow that was AMAZING (View from a bit south of Arthur's Pass, New Zealand)
A nighttime view looking to the south, with the Milky Way stretching across the left portion of the photo, and the two Magellanic clouds visible as little puffs of cloudy stars, with blazingly bright pink and orange aurora pillars low on the horizon. The auroras are also visible reflected in a lake that's just barely visible in the starlight, with silhouetted mountains on each side of the image.

Pro tip: if you’re flying from North America to Europe, always book a window seat on the left side of the plane!

Been working on converting coronagraph IDL routines for Lasco C2 and C3 + STEREO COR2 to Python. Most of it is working and produces nice coronagraphs, might be some bugs and missing features, but you can find it here: github.com/lelouedec/He... If you want to contribute, please reach out!

Another #solarstorm is approaching Earth 🌍 It's associated with an X1.2-class solar flare, again from active region AR 14274 (same as the CME predicted to arrive late tomorrow). It has an estimated initial speed of 1208 km/s - expected arrival is Wednesday, November 12th around 02:47 ± 5.67 UTC.

☀️ Earth is currently experiencing a class G3 geomagnetic storm (likely caused by a #solarstorm flank hit), with Dst values going as low as -136 nT in the last 12 hours. Bz magnetic field component is currently positive, Dst values remain around -110 nT
Three plots showing current space weather conditions at Earth. The left-most plot shows the magentic field conditions, with a currently positive Bz component that was previously negative. The middle plot shows the Dst index, which currently sits at around -110 nT. The right-most plot shows the Newell coupling, which is currently at close to 0, but has peaked around 4.

Day 3 at #ESWW2025! @hannahruedisser.bsky.social presented our automatic solar storm detection method ARCANE, combined with our models for the storm magnetic field (3DCORE) and arrival time (ELEvo), showcasing their power for real time application. (1/2)👇

ARCANE with its ability to also detect high speed solar wind streams was also shown during the live #spaceweather forecast! Further, fascinating talks on geomagnetically induced currents in Sweden, Germany and New Zealand, and discussions on ESA space weather plans for the next few years. (2/2)

Day 2 at #ESWW2025! @spacedavies.bsky.social rocked the stage with a talk on solar storm forecasts with sub-L1 monitors with @esa.int #SolarOrbiter. I participated in 2 panel discussion, on the role of validation, and the future of space weather modeling at ESA in the next 10-15 years. ☀️💥🤖

Happy Holidays from the Austrian Space Weather Office! 2024 featured the 2 strongest #solarstorm impacts at 🌍 in 20 years, and we could heavily improve our approach of combining research and operations in #spaceweather. On to another year of solar cycle maximum in 2025! Our achievements in 2024 👇
