To my mind, neither of these teachings get to the core of what really matters here. I don't write the jokes for press. Those are for me. They make *me* cackle. Anyone else enjoying them is just a bonus. /end

130

Walking Cardboard Heap @lejerque.bsky.social · 11/06/2026

The second thought is that this is a distraction. Because press have so many releases to get through, they just want the information delivered as concisely and directly as possible. "Clever" press releases waste their time, and they skip past the fluff. 4/x

110

Walking Cardboard Heap @lejerque.bsky.social · 11/06/2026

The first notion is that this sets the press release apart and makes it more memorable. Press receive a thousand releases a day, but a little wordplay or a slightly joking executive quote catches the eye. "Did that say what I think it said?" They go back and read again. It sticks with them. 3/x

100

Walking Cardboard Heap @lejerque.bsky.social · 11/06/2026

Is this a good practice for press releases? To my understanding, there are two schools of thought. 2/x

Walking Cardboard Heap @lejerque.bsky.social · 11/06/2026

I have written press releases for 15 years. It's one of the fundamental processes I do as a PR person. When I write them, I always add some dumb jokes. Age of Wonders adding owlkin? "Paradox Interactive, a publisher whose games are a real hoot" Remastered game? "a publisher of remasterpieces" 1/x
