CU Boulder’s planetarium went all-digital after I left, but the old Zeiss Mark VI projector I knew is on display in the lobby. After the reunion reception & talks under the dome, we went to the Sommers-Bausch Observatory. We grad students used to host Friday night open houses there.
Old planetarium projector with spherical orbs at either end of a supporting cylinder. One of the terraces of the student observatory. Three telescopes can be seen under red light illumination. Screens along one wall at the back can display what is visible through the eyepiece. Some people are milling around.

Another week of waiting for permissions for the Frost book. In the meantime I’m gathering thoughts about next projects. I’m at a reunion of my grad school program, seeing old friends and meeting new ones, and I’m inspired by their creativity.

Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS over Maunakea at Dawn Credit: Dr. Vera Maria Passegger/NAOJ subarutelescope.org/en/gallery/f... 🔭🧪 #Maunakea
On October 2, 2024 (Hawai‘i Standard Time), Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS appeared in the eastern sky. From Maunakea in the early morning, its long tail stretched across the vivid dawn sky, illuminated by the colors of sunrise. Five telescopes of the Maunakea Observatory are captured in this picture.

Whoever makes up the word list for Spelling Bee is young enough to be blissfully ignorant about labral tears in the hip and shoulder and how common they are.

I still get the print paper too. I don’t feel so guilty any more because so few people (in my area anyway) do it, there’s less going to landfills. And sometimes a local pottery teacher needs paper to wrap things in, etc.

This gave a good sense of your book—it’s broader in scope than I thought, and interesting. I’m usually railing against artificial light, but I appreciated mention of light poverty too. I think of students I saw in developing countries sitting under lamp-posts at night, so they could study.

The show included some “flying” sensations, constellation artwork, etc. The high point was a trip through Saturn’s ring plane. I have a PhD, I wrote a term paper once on the particle size distribution in the rings, but still when we sailed through the rings I joined the audience in a collective OOH!
