Today, we took Montana’s anti-trans bathroom ban to court … again. After securing a temporary block on the law last year, we’re now fighting to strike it down permanently.

Louisiana is suing to restrict telehealth access to the abortion pill mifepristone — and Legal Voice is fighting back. Throughout the case, we’ve educated courts about the importance of telehealth access, especially for survivors of intimate partner violence.

It shouldn’t be illegal to talk about abortion. But #Idaho politicians have been encroaching on the right to speak freely about the subject for years.

Our challenge to Idaho’s abortion bans is going to trial this week in Boise! We’ll be defending the right to “medically indicated abortion care.” That’s when a patient is seeking to end their pregnancy for a medical reason.

Telemedicine access to abortion is especially important to survivors of intimate partner violence, since their abusers often make it impossible to access in-person care. That’s why we submitted an amicus brief in support of FDA rules that allow mifepristone to be dispensed via telemedicine.
Supreme Court restores abortion pill access, for now

A WA appeals court has dismissed a retaliatory defamation lawsuit that targeted a survivor of sexual violence. This ruling sets a powerful precedent that will protect survivors who speak out about their experiences.
Case Update on Carter v. Jones:

A Washington appeals court has dismissed a groundless defamation lawsuit that targeted a survivor of sexual violence. This important ruling protects survivors’ right to speak out.In 2021, a parishioner and employee of a Yakima megachurch publicly alleged that she had been raped by the church’s pastor.

In retaliation, the pastor sued for defamation.Fortunately, the parishioner was able to file an expedited motion to dismiss the pastor’s lawsuit because of Washington’s Uniform Public Expression Protection Act (UPEPA).

This first-in-the-nation law creates a special process to quickly shut down lawsuits that silence public speech.By dismissing the pastor’s lawsuit under UPEPA, the appeals court has set a powerful precedent that will protect future survivors who speak out about their experiences.

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court decided to hear our challenge to HB 500, an Idaho law that bars transgender women and girls from participating in sports at school. We’re proud to be collaborating with the ACLU, ACLU of Idaho, and Cooley, LLP on the case.
We're going to the Supreme Court to challenge Idaho's anti-trans sports law.

Washington:
Washington: Dignity in Pregnancy Loss (SB 5093). Outcome: Passed. This bill ensures Washingtonians are not investigated or criminalized for their pregnancy losses. It also requires jails, prisons, and immigration detention centers to report pregnancy losses to the state annually. Washington: Advance Care Directives for Pregnant People (HB 1215). Outcome: Passed. When writing an advance care directive — or "living will" — many people use the template in WA’s Natural Death Act. Unfortunately, the current template includes a clause that invalidates the directive if someone becomes pregnant. By removing the clause, this bill protects people from accidentally giving up personal autonomy. Washington: Expanding Paid Sick Leave to Include Immigration Hearings (HB 1875). Outcome: Passed. This bill allows employees to use sick leave to prepare for, or participate in, immigration proceedings for themselves and their family members. Immigrants are essential to our communities and economy, and no one should be forced to choose between keeping their job and protecting their right to stay with their family.

Montana:
Montana: Restricting Shackling During Childbirth (HB 475). Outcome: Passed. This new law limits the inhumane practice of shackling incarcerated people who are giving birth. It’s well established that shackling seriously jeopardizes the health of both pregnant people and their newborns.Montana: Abortion Travel Ban(HB 609). Outcome: Defeated. Alongside our allies, we defeated this “abortion trafficking” bill, which would have blocked Montanans from traveling both in and out of state for abortion health care.Montana: Attack on Medication Abortion (HB 555 & SB 479). Outcome: Defeated. These bills are based on a conspiracy theory that medication abortion products affect wastewater quality. If enacted, they would have placed burdensome, unnecessary restrictions on health care providers and medication manufacturers.

Idaho:
Idaho: Funding Unregulated Pregnancy Centers (SB 1077). Outcome: Defeated. This bill would have pushed $1 million annually to unregulated pregnancy centers, excused those centers from significant accountability, and imposed requirements that made it even more difficult to get abortion health care in Idaho.Idaho: Empowering Violent Mobs (SB 1009). Outcome: Defeated. Sponsored by a legislator who told a Native American candidate to “go back where you came from,” this bill would have repealed Idaho’s long-standing ban on private, armed, organized militias.Idaho: Overturning Marriage Equality (HJM 001). Outcome: Defeated. This memorial would have urged the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn its decision in Obergefell v. Hodges. Such a ruling would destabilize families, create legal chaos, and undermine everyone’s rights to equal protection.

Today, HB 475 passed the Montana Senate with bipartisan support! Most states already restrict the use of leg and waist restraints on local inmates who are giving birth. With the passage of this bill, Montanans will finally be protected as well.
Good News
The Montana Senate passed HB 475, a bill that restricts the harmful practice of shackling inmates who are giving birth.
