I was a fan of the Legend of Korra, but did anyone else find it kind of strange when Bolin just said this out of the blue?
I had an argument with a friend: He insisted that Earthers were only really safe in the Earth Empire among fellow Earthers. I pointed out the absurdity of this since Earthers were quite evidently not particularly safe in the Earth Empire. Then he shifted: “Well, at least if you died there, you’d die amongst your brothers.” This is what I mean about nationalism being a doctrine of despair: ultimately, when you pull back the layers, nationalism is about desiring death, death for others and death for yourself. A warm, comfortable death for you, and a violent, cold, and terrible death for the other guy. It choses being subsumed in a mass to avoid the terrible difficulty of remaining human that rises to the fore in tragic moments like this one. When I die, I hope it will be here in Republic City, the promised land, surrounded by my brothers: all the different peoples of the world.

Looking at live 9/11 forum reactions, and it's honestly kind of crazy that there's probably like a 60% chance that these two people support the same party nowadays

ofcourse, like any rational human being i'm opposed to terrorism. but if we are to seriously look into the question of violence, one must not be automaticaly opposed to any form of it, and even a person who objects to violence must agree that there can be a terrorist act that can *reduce* the amount of violence in the world.

now, ok, take a deep breath. slam your heads at the wall if you must, but the fact being is that 30,000,000 (thirty million) people die each year of famine. thirty million. slavery, starvation, war, all funded by the darker side of 'globalism'.

No like I mean they actually did this. A team of woke zillennials got lost in the moment and decided it was really important that an organisation devoted to establishing a world government should post this so that history could look back and know they took a stand

Sanchez wins the election by one vote. He tries to find out who the last vote was. It was Fujimori. He then says to Fujimori “after all this you still voted for me?” Sanchez then changes his vote to Fujimori which then makes it a tie. They both get very emotional. Fujimori then leans in and makes out with Sanchez on national television. They run away and live the rest of their lives together. Which leaves George Forsyth as the 16th president of the Republic of Peru. The End.

Why on earth did Paul Tsongas put this in his campaign material
Occasionally individuals not blessed with a coherent culture will rise
above their circumstances and achieve greatness.
Nations never do.
A nation's fate is inescapably a function of the strength of its culture.
History certainly shows us that. Coherent binding cultures create great
nations for good or for ill. Centrifugal national cultures create dissolu-
tion and disarray, always for ill.
Why does history record great advances by a people in a particular
era and no advances by a different people in precisely the same era?
Why do a people advance in one time period and then seem to regress in
another?
The answer does not lie in factors like natural resources, geography
or political systems alone.
Often, the difference is culture.
Will, discipline, dedication, commitment, patriotism, togetherness,
caring, reaching out - these are the manifestations of a culture.

He was also the only Democrat in the 2020 primary to openly support packing the court, which was probably not a good thing to broadcast back then but it does show the right spirit. Obviously still wouldn't have picked him but shows he's hardly a political coward
Chart in which 2020 democratic primary candidates are asked if they support packing the court, Steyer is the only one to say yes unequivocally

The regime is pretty much nothing without the right set of expectations surrounding it. It is powerful because as a society, we believe it to be. If we would rather it be weak, we should create spectacles that make others believe it to be so. And maybe we will even convince ourselves along the way.
Large protests, much like the acts of resistance seen in Minneapolis, work to shift the narrative, but not only that; they change the calculus for decision-makers in corporate boardrooms and foreign capitals, in just the same way Nixon feared. When the regime cracks down, it generates more resistance. When it is forced to yield, it’s a sign to the would-be collaborators that the regime might not be so consolidated after all, and that maybe it’s not the best investment.

My proposal: liberals can do a little bit of cargo cult consolidation, as a treat www.liberalcurrents.com/credibility-...
Some have described the regime as attempting a strategy of ‘cargo cult authoritarianism’, in which they mistake reproducing the symbols of a consolidated authoritarian regime (personalistic displays, troops in the streets, audacity and the like) with actually achieving that regime consolidation. I think this is a reasonable description of how it has behaved, but I think it’s worth noting that this kind of signalling does actually have an effect, even if a lot of the effect is the negative backlash it produces. We saw that in the early months of the administration, all kinds of elites were willing to prostrate themselves before the regime and collaborate, presumably out of some sense that consolidation was inevitable and was already happening. The strategic error was in mistaking the signalling with the actual victory.

What I’m suggesting is that a ’cargo cult democratic renewal’ which uses symbols like bold reform and major house-cleaning to give off a sense of a long-term return to constitutional democratic government might give the next Democratic president forward momentum on their agenda. The other hallmarks of democratic renewal, such as a flourishing of third spaces and increased social trust, simply do not have the same narrative impact as events with clear personalities and individuals involved. However, we cannot trick ourselves into believing that consequences are all that is necessary. In the background, there must always be the other less glamorous efforts to overcome the fascist degradation of our politics.
