Trump’s election brought 10’s of millions of people who never cared before into politics, including millions on the ”left.” Some of these people went on to develop a coherent political ideology, but most still just see politics as Trump versus not Trump.

It’s the politics of the Marvel movie. My team good, other team evil. Good team must defeat evil team. That’s literally as deep as they go.

I’m perpetually amazed at how many people’s politics are literally no deeper than cheering for Democrats to win elections. Most of them don’t even care what Dems do after they win.

The press keeps talking about Abdul El-Sayed's relationship with Black voters, because they famously care so much about the beliefs and preferences of Black people!

Obama's daily life is essentially that of a celebrity Netflix executive, and similarly you get to book him for a one-hour block where he reads your candidate endorsement scripts

I may be being unreasonable as a Barack Obama hater, but I find it obnoxious that even as he enters the midterms and rolls out his candidate endorsements, he did them all on the same day in the same chair wearing the same clothes.

But also if I were a GOP hopeful you couldn't pay me to run in 2028. Feels like they are competing for who gets to be the sacrificial lamb. Obviously anything could happen but Trump's approval rating is in the low 30's and it's not going to get any better.

The only way CNN has even tried to pretend this is "news" is a "K-File investigation" about AES criticizing Obama in the past. But this is simply not something that Kaczynski just uncovered. People were talking and writing about these exact same quotes during the Dem primary.
2314
W.E.D.em Boyz @leftistwonk.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
The only real news story from this race is that Abdul El-Sayed continues to run strong and is well positioned to win. But CNN is essentially running an extended attack ad as "news" so we have to invent AES struggles among Black/Jewish voters that aren't even based on actual polling.

W.E.D.em Boyz @leftistwonk.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
The press has always been deeply ideological, but what I think is new is the way that it will just invent news cycles out of thin air. Every CNN show for the last two days is obsessively talking about the AES campaign, which is leading in every poll. This isn't in response to anything that happened.

There are relatively niche areas in which AI has been unambiguously useful, like in medical scans. But these type of applications are worth billions, not trillions. I just don't see how you make a multi trillion dollar case for AI that doesn't include an industrial scale of labor replacement.

W.E.D.em Boyz @leftistwonk.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Sometimes people will promote the AI future because of improvements in the chatbots. But chatbots are huge loss leaders. The more people use chatbots, the more OpenAI et al. burn money. If AI's future is just about chatbot improvement, we are heading for Great Recession 2.0 on steroids.

W.E.D.em Boyz @leftistwonk.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Something I don't understand about the AI optimists is what exactly they are optimistic about. For AI to "pay off" its multi trillion-dollar valuation, it would almost certainly have to do all the labor replacing stuff that everyone seems to agree would be a bad thing.

Anthropic is aiming for a $2 trillion IPO after making $4.6 billion of revenue in 2025, which an analyst nicely frames as an “unprecedented test of investor gullibility.”
As Anthropic
barrels toward a potential $2 trillion market cap on the Nasdaq, one research firm is valuing the artificial intelligence company at a mere $150 billion and says Wall Street is about to face an “unprecedented test of investor gullibility.”

In a report on Tuesday, independent financial research provider New Constructs called Anthropic’s upcoming offering the “most ridiculous IPO of 2026.”

To reach its desired valuation, the firm estimates Anthropic would need to record double the trailing year of profit for Nvidia, the world’s most valuable tech company. Nvidia’s net income over the past four quarters topped $190 billion. Meanwhile, Anthropic’s revenue in 2025 was $4.6 billion as the company racked up a net loss of $42 billion, according to Reuters, which cited a leaked copy of the company’s prospectus.

The conclusion is not that Gaza alone shifted millions of votes. The conclusion is that Gaza was a strong signal alongside a bunch of other factors including campaigning with Cheney and shifting right on immigration, war, etc. that made the Democratic base stay home.
2281
W.E.D.em Boyz @leftistwonk.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Saying it wasn't a top issue for people who voted doesn't add up because 1) of course people aren't going to list it higher than economy, jobs, etc. and 2) the people who stayed home aren't included in the polls
1240
W.E.D.em Boyz @leftistwonk.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
You can't divide the world into polling fractals and come to reliable conclusions. The 2024 election was not about a surge in Trump voters. Trump got 74M in 2020 and 77M in 2020. Given population growth, that is basically no increase. Conversely, Harris lost 7 million Dem voters who didn't turn out.

I'm glad Walz is critiquing that awful campaign, but this is still ultimately just excuse making. It boils the support for genocide down to a tough choice between two groups with no good answers. That is nonsense.

I find it bizarre to frame this around the Jewish and Muslim communities as if that is the extent of the problem. Jews and Muslims combined make up 3.4% of the US population. That's not why you lost. You lost because you chose the unpopular side of a 70-30 issue among your ENTIRE base.
Tim Walz says the Harris campaign chased the wrong voters — Dick Cheney Republicans: (Lever)

“It’s pretty hard to deny that one of our base was fractured — the American Jewish community and the Muslim community, over Gaza and the intolerable assault. In retrospect, we should have spent time there — not courting a nebulous group of Wyoming Republicans who weren’t going to vote for us.”

Jamelle tweets about Stephen Miller regularly, and he never refers to Stephen Miller's boss, because it is understood that Stephen Miller is just as bad if not worse than Trump. That should be how literally the entire GOP is treated. Not just because it's good politics, but because it's TRUE.
1455
W.E.D.em Boyz @leftistwonk.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I don't think Jamelle meant it this way but there is still this obsessive tendency to directionally aim all critique at Trump. Rubio is a demagogue and tyrant himself. He helped lead the charge on the illegal kidnapping of a foreign leader and an illegal war in Iran. He's pushing the same in Cuba.

She needed the money after she got fired from Fox News because she could not stop showing everybody dick pics
@yashar
In 2018, I was the first to report that Kimberly Guilfoyle was pushed out at Fox News due to misconduct allegations, which included sexual harassment.

One of the things I reported on — and there’s a lot I didn’t include in my report — was that Guilfoyle had a penchant for showing photos of male genitalia in the Fox News makeup room, sort of like someone showing off photos of a new car to their colleagues.

When Guilfoyle was told nearly a year in advance that her contract would not be renewed, she panicked over money and, obviously, the loss of influence.

It was all she could talk about: money, money, money, and another favorite topic of hers…

And I’ll never forget what a colleague of hers told me at the time: “All she talks about is dick and money.”
