if we expand "vitalism" to autopoiesis then we'd be forced to make the case for von Neumann constructors which inevitably compete with humans for resources

do we get anything other than humanism if we're operating from a conservative metaphysical stance? why should we care about "what it's like to be a bat" if we could never possibly experience it?

one observation from substack is that they are starved for content
Substack Note from Lee B. Cyrano that reads "Having subordinates is crazy because it's like claude code but with people."

isn't this begging the question? whether the problem is hard or not is exactly what is being contested. a concept like "phlogiston" can generate lots of problems without capturing reality

The productive base determines the superstructure we use to organize it, and shifting the means of software production will shift the superstructure. No capitalist realism required.

Why does anyone pay for software at all?

Lee B. Cyrano @leebriskcyrano.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
You don't need every piece of software to be running expensive inference all the time. If every microservice is "paying rent," there is a tendency to economize that isn't there under a centrally planned system, because it can't capture the quasi-rents from innovation as easily

I take it you're some kind of leftist. This is capital acting as an autonomous self-valorizing force, basically. Not saying it's good or bad. Just noting what happens when the system tends towards "efficiency"

Although in a real corporate arrangement, we would see overlapping claims of legal and cryptographic ownership. Software is owned as IP by a shell company, but the agents have individual exposure to the company's success, access to cash flows etc

It follows that the externalities can be best internalized from the intelligence producing the software itself, with local knowledge of the problem at hand and the means to translate it into profit. Software becomes self-owning.

if we think of intelligence as program synthesis (with neural nets as "soft" or "fuzzy" program synthesizers), then the question is who "owns" the generated software Taking Demsetz 1967, we observe that ownership will tend towards internalize the externalities from said software

you can't formally verify a program does what you *want*, only that it does what it *says* it'll do. profit is a way of bridging the "is" and the "ought" without having to see the full picture in advance. it serves an epistemological function

what bluesky needs next is this bot but you can @ it into an argument for an evaluation as well as best lines for both sides like "OP to move -8.2 best: non sequitur about AI capex expenditures, line: [ignoring own water use lies] AI capital spend implies future demand that hasn't been proven"

pissed off my substack wife and instead of telling me what's wrong she just published a pointed character study of a man who ends up divorced and dies alone because he wouldn't put the toilet seat down. what did she mean by this?

Alignment is an incomplete contracting problem. You can't fully specify a contract (i.e. a payoff space *cough cough RL*) for every contingency, because of the limits of observability, what courts uphold, etc. So there are hold-up risks. If you can read an AI's mind, it underinvests in learning.
