I think most of us who have worked with animal models have very weird stories to tell. I have seen mice waxed and pigs shaved, torn the testicles out of fruit flies, inflated mouse pancreases with enzyme solutions, and ridden a research building elevator with a calf.

The finished object, after five solid days of work. I'm not charging nearly enough. 🪡

A flat Elizabethan collar. The neck opening is bordered with black silk tafetta. The main collar is white linen, darted at the back to curve around the neck, and supported by a wire frame (underneath, not shown). Wide gold lace around the outer edge is stitched to supporting wire which is stitched to the collar. Narrow gold lace borders the neck hole and front opening. It measures about 18 inches wide by 15 inches front to back. All hand stitched, with hand bent wire.

A large flat linen-covered white 16th century collar with black silk around the neck and gold lace on the front edges on either side of an opening. The gold trim does not match up in the center, so somebody has to pick out some stitches and do something about that.

In historical costuming groups, I see arguments about how a certain fabric print is not, no way, appropriate for the time period, but some of the prints I see here really make me wonder. Show them a modern fabric selection and they'd say hell yeah

Never let a good piece of scrap fabric go to waist, er, waste. Big ol' pockets for your 18th century gown. Carry your phone, your knitting, your tampons, a pound of apples, small animals. EowynsCloset on Etsy. 🪡

A dress form with two 18th century pockets tied around its waist. The pockets are made of a printed damask cotton in shades of rust, olive, gold, and more. They are 18 inches long, 12 inches across at the bottom, with a 6 inch opening. White twill tape binds all the edges and forms the ties.

Current project (actually one of many): creating a wire frame for a rebato, a supported collar like you see on pictures of Shakespeare. 🪡

The pattern in white posterboard has been taped to brown corrugated cardboard and sewing holes punched at intersections. I have begun shaping black cotton covered millinery wire to follow the lines of the pattern, sewing through the cardboard to hold it in place.

With all of the wire in place, the next step is to gradually release it from the stitching while wrapping intersections and overlaps with black thread. I will also need to keep bending and tweaking the wire to improve the circles and force the whole thing to lie flat. Ultimately it will be covered with darted linen and a lace edging

Another project to use up distressed black satin and random bits of trim. A diversion from my usual output of historical costuming, but it is still kind of costumy. 🪡

Short black satin jacket with long narrow sleeves. The front closes with a zipper, whose truncation led to some of its metal teeth bouncing off walls on the other side of the room as I fought to remove them. The sleeves are decorated with various laces, and have leopard-print fleece wrist facings. The side fronts are covered with sequined embroidered green netting. Two brooches on upper right front are linked by swags of fake pearls and beads. The collar is outlined in gold and white beads, with drop pearls at the front corners. The back is covered in black lace. The lining is red plaid flannel.

Is that floral section woven, printed, or embroidered? I have been going down a 16th century clothing rabbithole and the amount of hand embroidery is awe-inspiring, not for the wearers but for the toil of the embroiderers.

The little 16th century item of clothing known as a partlet is usually shown in plain black or white in portraits, but this flea market find of 20th century eyelet fabric told me it wanted to be a partlet, with bead bling and a black wool lining.🪡

A partlet, which is a kind of Elizabethan dickey that covers the shoulders and bosom and can be pinned over your gown. This one is white eyelet fabric with a black lining, and alternating motifs in the eyelet pattern have been given a starburst of a gold bead with 8 gold colored bugle beads radiating from it.

On a green flannel sheet, strips of various laces, a crochet yoke for a top, table covers of various sizes with embroidery, cutwork, pulled thread work, eyelet work, and more.
