It was like being in a museum exhibit. I've been reading 'May We Feed the King' by Rebecca Perry so it felt especially mimetic. The commitment to the experience was pretty admirable.

I am working as a ballot counter on election night, and today I went for training and discovered that the election office has a mock polling station set up...right down to the 'I voted!' stickers!
The mock polling station set up for training election workers even includes a roll of the 'I voted' stickers.

I work with these programs from time to time -- the legal agreements can be a bit of a pain, but the training opportunities they present are really substantial, and the funding actually makes it possible to be able to go. It's such a good use of science diplomacy.

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a horseshoe crab watches as a variety of prehistoric creatures swim towards an ethereal light. An ammonite calls back to the crab, “come on, horseshoe crab! We’re all evolving!” Panel 2: the horseshoe crab stays in position and replies, “nahh that’s crazy” Panel 3: the horseshoe crab is superimposed in front of a future premonition: a rather miserable-looking human slouched in the glow of a desktop computer. The horshoe crab swims away and says, “good luck tho”

Finished Roy Bhaskar's 'A Realist Theory of Science,' and I'm struck by how similar the notion of all scientific knowledge building on its antecedents is to T. S. Eliot's discussion of poetry in 'Tradition and the Individual Talent.' Both exploring disciplines that are intrinsically social acts.

Wake up, babe. The Prime Minister just dropped “hydronym”.
The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.

The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.

Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.
