My most unfortunate takeaway from Coyote vs. ACME is that I am, in fact, the kind of person who would listen to an entire album of choral classics sung on 'meep'. Hell, I'd be part of that choir. Put me in, coach!

I firmly believe that libraries are our most important public institutions, and we've perhaps never needed them as much as we do right now.

Just want to take a moment today to shout out my love for @qplnyc.bsky.social. I've been a patron since 2017, and they have consistently made card renewal so easy and accessible through their website. As someone who doesn't do well with summer heat, it truly means the world to me!

1. Book you've reread the most times? For a while, I think it was probably The Phantom Tollbooth or The Facts and Fictions of Minna Pratt, but I think those have probably been recently surpassed by my semi-annual reads of Howl's Moving Castle

Sadly, for regular use, it's probably my poor little college toaster, which is almost 15 years old. despite needing to occasionally have the lever slammed down about half a dozen times, it still works irregularly, probably the ring I inherited from my Nana which is somewhere between 40 and 50

for me, a person whose most likely scenario for overheating and fainting is standing still for too long only to have the pharmacist ask me: "aren't you switching from [current rx] to [new rx that my doctor wanted to try to see if I respond better]? no, you ghoul, because insurance won't cover it

a sterling example of what it's like to be chronically ill and dealing with America's medical "system" at the pharmacy this morning stood at the counter--not in the line, at the counter--with my medications two feet from me for 15 minutes waiting for the pharmacist to enter the approval code

I just need my friends (and strangers!) in these professions to know that I wish you wouldn't diminish the work you do as unimportant. It's so important, and I know I'm not the only one who thinks so. I'm not saying anything groundbreaking here, but it deserves to be reiterated. (6/6)

And that stuff doesn't exist or make its way to people without not only creators, but the people who do the sometimes tedious work of logistics and planning and everything else that goes into making creative work accessible. (5/6)

It was knowing that, at the end of the day, I can play Pokopia and read a good book. Or listen to music or a podcast while I did some monotonous other task. Or even just eating a sandwich for lunch that I didn't have to make. (Yes, that's creative work too!) (4/6)

Which is not to diminish the importance and difficulty of those other professions, because they are also crucial and underappreciated! But I have had some truly crappy past few weeks, and you know what kept me moving? Not my looming doctors' appointments, I can tell you that. (3/6)

I have a fair amount of friends in creative or adjacent professions who, jokingly or not, dismiss the importance of their work. They'll compare themselves to medical or advocacy professionals and say that their work isn't necessary by comparison. And that's just not true. (2/6)

A Saturday morning thought: I have so much gratitude for folks in creative professions and those who do the ground work (administration, distribution, etc.) that allows creative work to thrive and reach people. It's crucial and it matters, and I need you to know that. (1/6)

Choosing favorites is always so hard but I think it's got to be Temeraire. But honorable mentions go to Kalessin from Earthsea and a character who I won't name for spoiler reasons from Rachel Hartman's Seraphina

Tons of industry pros (agents, editors, artists) are donating items, so spread the word to writers and illustrators who want professional help on their project. Opportunities like this come very rarely to get feedback from this caliber of professionals. Plus it supports worthy organizations.

Because again, maybe this was just me. I cracked under the pressure of a confluence of bad circumstances, not just this. But in seeing discussions about some frankly awful responses authors have received to submissions, I think a lot about who survives in this environment and why.

And to be clear, there are editors out there who are doing the good work in spite of all this, who are holding on by the skin of their teeth to make sure that those books make it out into the world in one way or another. I have so much admiration for them, for the resilience they have that I didn't.

You see your hopes for great books get dashed again and again when they don't get any kind of promotional budget. It's demoralizing. You put so much love and time into books that you KNOW are wonderful and they just disappear. And that, among other things, absolutely broke my heart and my spirit.

Leah Spann @leahspann.bsky.social · 12/01/2026
Because you can choose books that are beautiful and breathtaking and important and that you love with all your heart, because you believe in them and will fight for them. Because you know there are readers who want and need them. But that passion isn't usually enough.

Or maybe it's not part of a larger trend, and it was just me who experienced it, but I feel like I've seen it happen to others. Editors who love their niche, who want to help unique projects find their audience, who aren't getting the support they need in key (financial) places.

Leah Spann @leahspann.bsky.social · 12/01/2026
I've often wished I had the mental and emotional wherewithal to posit why I think the publishing industry loses editors who are willing to take chances on projects they love that don't necessarily fit a category trend or meet a certain threshold for engagement. Maybe I'm mad and sad enough today.
